Weight Reduction
Hi All -
We have a big road trip planned for the end of the month and I would love to lose some extra lbs to save on gas money and make the truck a little nicer to drive. Not planning on ditching my bars (short wife and small kids) or switching tires (need them to access a few spots on our itinerary) but I am open to ideas.

What do you have on your truck?
Without knowing that the only thing I can think of is removing half the rear seat (and the 3rd row if you have one).

It is pretty much stock other than the couple things I noted plus a sleeping platform (again, needed for the trip). Can you cram 2 car seats onto the 60% portion of the back seat?

Not much to remove to save weight apart from ripping out all the seats and the rest of the interior. If your looking for economy it's the wrong vehicle.

I don’t think two car seats will fit in the 60, but I also don’t think you would notice the difference with the 40 removed. You could roll the dice with no spare tire, but I wouldn’t.

Remove the factory roof rack to reduce drag, but it's not easy to swap on/off.
Remove the spare but you may need it. The spare tire cable/winch weights a good amount.

OK, I figured there wouldn't be any quick and dirty ways to knock off some pounds but figured I would ask just in case I was missing anything obvious. Thanks!

This..no matter how much weight you pull out, the amount of effort versus the return won't be worth it..

What exactly tires are you running? A 41lb P265 Toyo AT II will access any spot that a 54lb LTE KO2 will access. On a 5th gen 4runner anyway. There will be a small chance for puncture in the harshest of deserts but that's what the spare is for.
Nothing will make a bigger difference than having a good tire weight and sticking to the stock size or nearby (255 75).
If you are running a tire north of about 50, you need to look no further. If you are very weight sensitive, look for a tire not much more than 40.
|
It’s easier to be a weight weenie with smaller stuff like bikes or luggage. A stock 4Runner? Pretty much this (tires), air them up properly for the highway, and go easy on the throttle.
