I bought a set two weeks ago. No noticable road noise over stock. They handle well on the road. Only off-road use has been some muddy construction sites and they did fine. I think they look pretty sharp as well.

No experience. Some of my impressions.

Seems more tires I’ve observed are looking more like BFG AT KO’s.

Checking Cooper’s website, I had Google what an “XL” rating was. Never have seen that before.

No specifics on sidewall ply construction. Single? Double? Triple? If not triple, I’m not interested. I hate flat tires, especially those caused by a ripped sidewall.

I like Cooper tires. I have a premium set on my Subaru Outback. On my old Tacoma TRD the last tires I installed a set of LT rated Discoverer AT3 but were disappointed in their snow performance on and off road. The tire, however, never gave me any day to day issues.

After using BFG AT T/A tires since 1996 on three trucks (with exception of those Coopers I installed a couple years before replacing the Tacoma with my 4Runner), I plan to stick with what has worked well for me. I’ve got them on my ‘18 SR5, replacing the OEM tires within a few months and a torn sidewall on the OEM’s.

So you have zero real world experience with the Rugged Treks and you came in here to talk about cooper tires that aren’t Rugged Treks and how you plan on continuing to run BFGs?

OK I was thinking it was more serious that that. I just got a set (285/75) and I'm having trouble getting them balanced and they're requiring a lot of weight to balance. They also follow road grooving much worse than any tire I've ever run. I've only got 500 miles on them so they may get better.

my opinion...

I thought I'd chime in since I've tried the Rugged Treks.

Being a Cooper fan (3 sets total on a previous 2018 5th Gen and a GX470), I've had 3 sets of AT3 LT in 265 and 275. Super happy with them, even though the tread isn't quite as aggressive as others, I found that for my trails (Sierra moon dust, volcanic stuff in the Ishi wilderness even a Moab trip...etc) they worked perfect. Never slipped off road and on road in the wet, nice and grippy.

I was stoked when I got my 2021 4Runner and saw that Cooper was doing a "hybrid". I didn't like the fact there was only XL or E and no C though. I got the 265/70/17 in the XL, since my set of E AT3 LT was a bit of a stiff sidewall and translated to a noticeable drop in MPG and acceleration off the line.

The good: my limited trail use in gravelly/rocky Sierra trails were drama free and didn't pick up as many stones in the tread as the AT3 LT. The XL aired down ride was much smoother that the E version. They also had better looking sidewall / tread for what that is worth. The on-road ride was quite good and not too stiff and were super grippy in the dry. Didn't get to try the wet since I live in Northern California and everything is on fire.

the not so good: on road I had a huge issue with the pull to the right. Kinda like "don't let go of the wheel or you'll smash the curb" pull. Surface streets, freeways, any speed..... It was drove me nuts, especially in a 4Runner with 250 miles on it. Having to fight the wheel constantly keep it in the lane got tiresome.
The second issue was they are freaking noisy. At any speed above 5 mph, it was there. Some types of road were much worse than others. Some freeways there were tolerable, some freeways felt like you had to yell over them and even the stereo wouldn't drown it out.

There weren't many reviews on these tires when I got them, so no one had mentioned either of the issues I had experienced. I thought maybe there was an alignment issue, but I had it checked and all specs were dead nuts where they should have been. I tried different pressures and higher and lower made no difference. I wanted to like and keep them, but they kinda drove me nuts with the noise and pull.

I had them a little over 30 days and 1,200 miles. Americas Tire / Discount Tire installed them and tried a rotate/balance (just in case), but still the same. I traded them for another set of the AT3 LT in C and there is no pull and only slightly more noise than the OE Dunlops.

So, of course, you may not have these problems or they may not bother you as much as they bothered me. I've since read that some of the Cooper ST Maxx have a similar pull, but people live with it. Maybe it's the way the outer part of the area is angled that causes the pull? I was just shocked that others hadn't mentioned it in their reviews.

I wanted to like them. I gave them a fair shake but had to give up. Maybe I'm over sensitive and maybe these issues were bigger in my mind than they would be in yours. I just recommend if you buy them, make sure you have the opportunity to trade them if you have the problem.

Sounds like you got bad tires. I have zero road noise, balancing and alignment was easy day first try, and I don’t pull at all with zero steering wheel vibes. I would have contacted Cooper.

I suspected the same thing, thats why I tried for the rotate / balance. The balance part was perfectly fine, never had a problem with that at any speed. Like I said, I wanted to like them and wanted to keep them, but it just didn't work out. I'd even drove on the opposite side of the road to make sure it wasn't just a road crown pull too.

I did contact Cooper more than once. Never did get a response back. They had answered previous questions before the purchase, but after, when I asked if there may be an inherent pull and if I should try another set..... nothing. Frustrating.

I'm not here to slam the tires or Cooper themselves, just wanted to give my experience. I hope everyone else that tries them has a positive experience. I have a feeling they'd be good off road.

So I did see that there are a couple of post regarding people coming from KO2s to these, but both reference immediate set up issues right away. Can anyone comment specifically how these compare to the ride of the KO2s that didn't have set up issues?

I just put the Rugged Treks on my 2014 4Runner Trial and as others have said, they are a lot less noisy than you'd expect by the looks. There is a faint hum, but nothing that impedes normal conversation levels. However that combined with the ride quality is not nearly as smooth as the KO2 (E loads) on my wife's Land Cruiser.

I know these a very different trucks, but just curious on any comparisons from folks who have run these two tires?

Thanks for the heads up. This is true. There aren't any Coopers available through my local dealers (at least according to toyotatirecenter.com) but I have to get something to replace my stock Dunflops before winter so I may get one of the options they have that I've been considering. One note, their net installed price for the 3+1 is more than the everyday price at some chains that I have been tracking on certain tires so take the promo with a grain of salt (on others they are less).

After owning a set of Cooper ATP's I can say that siping disappears about halfway through the tread. So when it disappears it's just tread blocks

sipes are all the way through on my cooper at3 XLT's.

*theyre worn to about 15% of tread life left currently on my f250

It’s been about 8,000 miles since I last posted on the Rugged Treks. They are still doing well. Just had them in a little mud and they performed well also. Road noise is faint. Ride quality is still good. My only concern is sidewall toughness. I’m planning on taking some trails this summer in the southwest. Much different geography than here in Illinois. More rocks among other things. Anyone used these on some southwest Arizona New Mexico or Southern California trails? How did they do? I’m thinking about switching to some BFG KM3s.

are they built the same as the AT3 XLT's? if so, dont worry. we abused ours, wife chose questionable lines in baja, and have had zero issues. Just run them bring a full size spare.

More aggressive sidewall treads I think than the AT3. From what I can find as far as sidewall goes it’s 2 high strength steel belts with a 3rd nylon belt for better handling.
