Exclamation Wheel balance problems - static balance helped a lot

I'm one of the "lucky few" who have long-running wheel balance problems. These manifested as steering wheel shimmy and/or vibrations from the rear.

Here's a lengthy thread detailing my problems, and things I tried to fix them: Yet another 4Runner wheel balance problem...

The problems persisted after switching from E-rated KO2's to P-rated Falken Wildpeaks.

An old hand at a different shop performed a "static balance" and no road force test. I hit the road and, shazam, no noticeable steering wheel shimmy or rear vibrations at highway speed! The ride quality was as good as it has ever been since I bought the vehicle.

That was 3300 miles ago. In the interim I've driven everything from smooth highways to rough, rocky trails. Randomly and rarely, I briefly get mild steering wheel shimmy at highway speed. The rest of the time it's fine.

Sooo...if you're having wheel balance problems, perhaps try this before new tires or other expensive fix attempts.

Here's one explanation of the difference between static and dynamic balancing: Wheel Balancing 101 - Static vs Dynamic Wheel Balancing | E-Quipfix Ltd

P.S. After the static balance I now have far fewer weights on my wheels (the RR has a single 1/4 ounce weight). And they are in different spots on the wheel (obvious due to all the tape residue).

I'm right there with ya. Seems that there are innumerable solutions to the steering shimmy. Mine is under control now -- until the next rotation

The Wheel Balancing 101 article presents static versus dynamic as if the choice is only one or the other, static for narrow tires or dynamic for wider tires. For rotating machinery, rotors should be both statically and dynamically balanced. Has anyone tried a static balance followed by a dynamic balance, where the dynamic balance is performed without removing the static balance weight?

I haven't, but it's an interesting idea. If the shimmy again becomes a consistent problem, I might go back and suggest that.

I just tried this as I’m having the same issue with the same tires. This did not help a ton for me, but I’m starting to think one of my tires is bad.

It sucks to be one of the "chosen few" with these balance problems. Hopefully you figure it out.

On a related note, I recently drove a brand new Wrangler Unlimited (4-door) Rubicon with 33" off-road tires. Smooth as could be at 65 MPH. Yes, it's brand new and my 4Runner has 50K miles on it...but my 4Runner has never been that smooth on the highway. A rather sad state of affairs.

We also have a Tacoma that has these same falken tires on it, but stock size and it rides extremely well with no vibration and does 21mpg on the highway. How is my 12 year old truck riding nicer than my newer 4Runner lol.

Update

Update: about 6500 miles after the static balance, still doing well.

I occasionally get a little steering wheel shimmy after hopping on the highway or freeway. But that only lasts a minute or so, and 99+ percent of the time, it's good at highway speeds, no steering wheel shimmy or vibrations.

No, I don't plan to do a rotation, lol.

I had some 19.5" tires that would not balance. Tire shop eventually threw in some balance beed. Worked great. Not sure if it would help small 4runner tires.
