Viair 88p or 400p-auto?

I feel like I'm mainly deciding between these two options.

Canadian $, I can get the 88p for about $100 while the 400p-auto is about $300, so it's bigger, heavier, and 3x the price.

I don't do "offroad wheeling" but do travel, sometimes for a long time, on forestry roads so I'd want to air down+air up to make the ride more comfortable and minimize puncture risk.

I have stock 265/70-R17 tires but upgraded to the Falken WildPeak AT3/W.

It seems that both should work I guess. I'd imagine probably going from ~20ish-45ish PSI.

I *think* for me the main value of the 400p is the faster fill rates, but just wondering what you guys think if it's worth the 3x price premium overall?

I have had 88P for several years now.

I don't see the need for the pricier/fancier one for your described use.

I also don't see the need to go down to 20sh for forest roads. I would do 28 and call it a day. Better for the tires at higher speeds and comfortable enough.

The 88P does take some time to air up from 20 so I would imagine for people who need lower pressures than that for sand, the upgrade is warranted.

I was recently able to air up from 20 to 35 on a hot day (two separate occasions) without issues. It does get really hot.

How often are you planning to air up? Check the fill rates between them and decide what your time is worth.

The 400 is a much more robust compressor than the 88 and should pretty much last forever. You can get replacement parts for the 400, not so much for the little ones, I have heard.

I have dual 400s in an on board air setup and use them several times a week for 8 years, no problems so far other than having to replace the leader hoses recently as the rubber had dry rotted.

Flow rate is part of the big disparity in pricing. Basically do you want to stand there for 10 minutes filling your tires or 30. Also as mentioned you can rebuild one or throw the other away and buy another

I run the 88P and I air up from 18 to 37 in a 285/70 tire. Takes a while, but it's not too bad. I've a wheeling friend with a Smittybuilt model that's abut twice the size (don't know CFM rating) and I'm usually 1 tire behind them filling up. Another friend with a single onboard ARB fills his 35s in half the time it takes me to do my 33s with the 88p.

I've used the 300P for a few years now. I wish I got the 400P-Auto, because it's becoming annoying to have to walk to the compressor, turn it off, walk back to wheel & disconnect, walk to next wheel & connect, walk to compressor, turn it on, lather, rinse, repeat 3 more times.

88P will work fine, but 300P and 400P will inflate much quicker.

400p no brainer. Buy once, cry once. I love mine, super fast. 400p has the long hose, inline fuse, more robust everything.

I've owned the 84p. 84p gets insanely hot, burned my arms a couple times. I know its not the 88p, but they seem similar just glancing at the specs. Now it sits as a backup in my cabin. I've had to fill mine and my friends tires after a Pismo Beach camping trip - literally took 20 mins for both cars, and we still had to go to the gas station for his truck because we still needed about 15 PSI more than the compressor was capable of.
