If you want to take all of the challenge out of everything.

I am running 35" MTRs at 5psi on 4.56 gears and it makes all of the trails in the San Juans smooth and boring, from an off road driving perspective. On the other hand, I get to spend more time appreciating the scenery, which is better, IMHO. There are plenty of places to do technical off road driving, not so many places that look like the San Juans.

Haha, yeah. The San Juans are not difficult, I have driven most trails in my Outback.

I love the scenery, it is phenomenal.

I have been planning to venture deeper into CO but it kinda never seems to work for us. When we go further than 1 day from home, we go really far like Montana.

I see a lot of the CO trails were bumped in difficulty by Wells in the latest edition. Here and in UT things are not so bad: the hardcore trails that get the abuse are clearly differentiated from regular difficult and moderate trails.

Don't tell anyone here, but an Outback will handle bumpy moderate trails better than a 4runnner.

I don't think I have any Well's books from less than 10 years ago. I can tell you the trail conditions are highly variable. A good local trail to me, Sheep Creek, can range anywhere from a 3 to 10+ in the last 3 years, depending on rock fall and washouts. Nothing like winching down a 30 degree slope.

Yup. I used to keep there a short recovery insert and it did a fantastic job at saving the hitch. For example, the very steep rock on the southern loop of Fins and Things where even new Rubicons scrape.

I now use a 35$ hitch skid plate meant for front hitches. It does not have the better design of the 160$ offroad hitch protectors but it does the job at a fraction of the cost. And I don't have to use locking pin to protect the protector lol.
