Air filter changed
FYI, I just picked up an oem Toyota air filter for my 2015 Trail & noticed it was about half the depth of the previous ones I've used. The model number is the same (YZZ....) & the parts guy verified this. He went in the back & said there was a memo stating Toyota went from 35mm to 20mm depth. Just found it interesting is all.

What is the depth of the new one?
The OEM I bought on amazon has exact dimension as the one on my 4runner.

I think it was about $10 cheaper than the old version at least. $18 if I remember.

That’s strange.
You’re referring to the engine air filter, not the cabin air filter, right?
The old engine air filter version with the foam pre-filter (as delivered on a new vehicle P/N 17801-38051) is about 55mm if you measure from the rubber gasket to the end of the foam. The other version without the foam (US P/N 17801-YZZ13) is about 5mm shorter.
Do you have a photo of yours?

according to this video by Toyota master tech, the yzz model number is designated to the economy line of parts. For example, this forum complains about an inferior brake pad that Toyota sells with the xxYZZxx part number.

I had previously changed my filter, so on the last service they gave me the air filter they were going to put in....
And it does not have the pre-filter.

The moral of the story: Don’t buy the filter the parts counter guy tells you to get. Do your research and buy the OE.
Air Intake Filter. Toyota 4Runner | Toyota

That makes sense. They're for the same applications but clearly, at least with the air filter, it's an inferior part (without the foam pre filter).

dont stress too much. I feel like the pre foam filter is just to absorb and reduce some of the air filter noises.

OIL Filter is YZZ
Isn't the OE oil filter part # 04152-YZZAM? So it's inferior? That's the only OE oil filter there is unless you get the TRD one.

The YZZ parts aren’t inferior. They’re more of a Toyota low cost budget line, as explained in the video.
As far as I can tell there is only one part number for the 5th Gen oil filter kit:
Part Number: 04152-YZZA5
What I read somewhere about the air filter was that it’s a world standard filter as shipped from Japan. With a foam pre-filter for extra gritty sandy places like the Middle East and Australia, etc.
Americans don’t need it so much to get to the mall. LOL.
Although you can still get it from legit Toyota suppliers online. If you order from Amazon etc you will probably get the non-foam version.

Well the others I bought in the past were all folded paper; no foam. This one I bought last week is about half the depth of the previous air filters. I can't stand Don McGill Toyota. Really all dealerships I've dealt with.
