Your OBDLink MX+ is showing engine oil temperature 177.8 F which is too low if the engine is fully warmed up. Oil temperature leaving the engine and entering a cooler should be above 212, ideally 220-230 F to evaporate condensation in the crankcase. Your oil temperature is also less than coolant temperature, 186.8 F, which doesn't make sense if this is oil temperature exiting an oil/coolant heat exchanger. Why would Toyota measure coolant or oil temperature at the exit of a radiator or heat exchanger? When a technician wants to perform diagnostics, isn't it better to measure coolant and oil temperature exiting the engine block?

Have you observed an engine oil temperature reading in the 220 to 230 F range?
Only time I seen my oil temps get up in the 220-230’s is in the Rocky Mountains.
I know this little scanner isn’t the perfect fit for everyone’s application but it fit the bill for me. As for how or why the oil temps are the way they are I don’t know, all I know is when I cross reference the oil temps on the scanner with a thermal gun reading the oil pan it’s within an acceptable range for me.
The transmission pan temps are Spot On between the scanner and the thermal gun, the engine oil pan temps can be up to 5-20 degrees hotter than the scanner. But that’s still good info because it gives me a range.
Below are two pics from tonight.

Yep, that's the correct approach. If it requires 4HI and there's a long sustained climb or even a short and steep climb, 4LO is what should be used. Here in CO it's not uncommon to overheat the trans in 4HI offroading.

This reminds me to pull out my Scangauge. It's been buried at the bottom of my center console unused since 2 years ago when I sold the Ecoboost F150.

Scan Gauge II Codes..New stuff
The post you're referring to is number 123 on page 9 of that thread. Travelin wrote, "I have a new 2018 TRD Off Road Premium factory stock and a new ScanGuage II. I programmed X-Guages for trans temp and engine oil temp. The trans temps and the built-in coolant temp read as expected. However I'm puzzled by the engine oil temp reading. I programmed the codes I found on the ScanGuage website as follows:

(ScanGuage has removed the codes for 4Runner engine oil temp, so I have deleted the link. They said although the codes I found are correct and work, they were posted inadvertently and have not yet been publicly released. )

After driving for about an hour at highway speeds the engine oil temp reading on the ScanGuage tracks almost perfectly the transmission fluid temperatures (160 to 170 degrees F). I expected the EOT to be substantially higher."

I’ve been looking for something like this. Thank you

I went to the OBDLink MX+ forum and asked this question, "The 5th generation 4Runner doesn't have a Engine Oil Temperature Sensor and yet there is a Toyota Specific PID that displays Engine Oil Temperature. Is the value calculated? If so, how is it calculated?"

Their reply, "EOT is obtained directly from a sensor, or inferred by a control strategy using other sensor inputs. The Toyota specific PIDs are supplied directly by Toyota and unfortunately, do not come with any explanations."

Apparently, Engine Oil Temperature is a value calculated from other sensor data. Perhaps someone with a TIS subscription may find information about this Toyota specific PID and how it is used by the ECU.
