Which one to mod?
I have a 2020 4Runner trd off road and a 2021 Tacoma trd. I plan on setting one or the other for a trail/camping rig. I want to put on a Small lift 2in. On one of them. Any advice welcome I’m new to Toyota’s.

You're gonna get a lot of votes for the 4Runner on a 4Runner forum, but both are great platforms with lots of aftermarket support for camping and overlanding. Really depends on what you're looking to do with the vehicle

If I was a single guy/gal, or had just a dog or my partner, I’d probably mod the tacoma. If you have kids or additional folks that often tag along, definitely set the 4Runner up for travel.
It’s going to completely come down to what you are wanting to use it for.

4Runner. You can sleep in the back and have a much larger and secure cargo area for camping gear in the 4Runner. 4Runner is also easier to mount a RTT if you went that route with the addition of some aftermarket crossbars. And if you have friends or family coming along, it is more comfortable and you can keep everyone’s gear in the cargo area safe and secure.

4runner. Keep the tacoma useful as a pickup truck.

I'd mod the 4Runner and keep the Tacoma relatively stock. If you're like me, one will turn into a toy and the other a daily driver.

Assuming one of these has to be a daily driver.....leave the daily driver stock and mod the other...this way you won't feel like you have to make compromises like less aggressive tires or worry about weight as much.

I’d never thought that would be a six figure view.
Two very capable vehicles in stock form. Whatever you do, start by getting better tires for both.

To me, the answer lies in determining what you take with you on adventures -- both people and gear. 4Runner is better at keeping all your gear enclosed and dry, which also means less prone to theft. The Taco is better at segregating your gear and leaving the passenger compartment for, well, passengers; no worries about muddy and wet stuff inside. Having dogs, kids, people going with you will influence your choice. For example, it's going to be hard to take a dog or two and a few friends at the same time in the Taco, while the Runner will take care of that with ease. The 4Runner is better as an alternative shelter to sleep inside if the weather is really nasty and you have to get out of the tent. Tacoma might have longer wheelbase (I don't know for sure), which can make it for a more comfy drive on the roads (more stable) but has disadvantages with breakover angle offroad.

Having driven both a Tacoma, (2nd gen) and 5th gen 4runner I would say mod the 4runner. The Tacos from the factory are a little easier to wheel, (with a decent tire), than the 4runner. Heck even the factory tires on taco offroad vs 4runner off road are slightly better. I also feel like the Tacos look just fine with factory wheels/ tire size, and no lift whereas I think 4runners look a lot better with a small lift/tire.

The folks that responded "what is unique to your situation, especially related to what number and type of people you have with when" They have it figured out. it's about you not the two choices at hand.
ex. no kids, just you and a friend camping then mod the Tacoma. Then the 4Runner is the daily driver and room to take people to dinner/bar/game/etc.
ex. have more than two going camping but your daily driving is pretty much only you. Mod the 4Runner as your camping rig.
Now if you had asked 4Runner vs Honda Accord
