It's coming on early because every time you get on here and b*tch about your 4Runners quality it sheds a little tear of oil so your consumption is high.

I agree, we could go farther than 5,000 miles oil change intervals. I just do it anyway, change the oil when the dash tells me. I do it myself and also rotate the tires at the same time. Oil is cheap now. I may start skipping the filter change. I use Royal Purple/TRD filters. I didnt like changing the filter on my 3rd gen either. So I did the filter every 10,000 miles (every other time). I don't have a problem with oil-only changes. The manual tells you how much oil to use when not changing the filter, so it must be fine. (page 459)

I know for a fact my 2012 Honda Accord used more than simply mileage to determine change interval. It is also apparent from your quoted mileages that Toyota does too. You went 4400 miles before light, then 8600 miles before light, and 5000 miles before light for the last.
If your driving patterns have changed and the duty cycle results in higher load, higher rpm, short trips that never warm up the oil, and other factors in some combination it would result in the need to change the oil sooner.
I would not recommend just resetting the maintenance minder and moving on till 10,000. I would change the oil and if you are really curious, send a sample in for analysis. For the cost and time of changing your oil it's really not worth not changing it when you are at 5,000 miles and the vehicle is stating it should be changed.

Honda's Maintanence Minder is a great system, unlike this Toyota one. MM actually does take other factors into affect. I followed it religiously on my old Accord. The light came on at a different mileage every time, unlike the 4Runner which is always at about 4500 miles. It's stupid with a recommended 10k interval. Granted, it's pretty easy just to reset it and move on with my day.

Why is everyone overlooking the OP's mileages for maintenance minder?
He said it came one at 4400, then 13000, then 18000. This means it does not come on every 4500 or every 5000...
This means it came on after 4400 miles, then again after 8600 miles, then after 5000 miles. Solid data, no conjecture, no assumptions..... it doesn't go off on a purely mileage based equation. If it did, it would come on at 5000, 10000, 15000, etc.
Has anyone else tracked miles traveled between oil change indicator?

The recommended interval is 10,000 miles, so I stick with that, or thereabouts. I’ve been faithful to do 3000-mile oil changes at times, and gone 15,000 miles at other times over the past 45 years. But I’ve never experienced an engine failure due to a lubrication problem. My view - stick with the manufacturer’s recommendation and don’t waste any more time on it than that.

I did the changes based on mileage not waiting to be reminded by the truck. It may have come on at the 13k interval but not at the 4.4k change.

Dude…
■ If “Oil Maintenance Required Soon” is displayed (U.S.A. only)
Indicates that all maintenance according to the driven distance on the mainte-
nance schedule* should be performed soon.
Comes on approximately 4500 miles (7200 km) after the message has been reset.
If necessary, perform maintenance. Please reset the message after the main- tenance is performed. (P. 399)
*: Refer to the separate “Scheduled Maintenance Guide” or “Owner’s Manual Supplement” for the maintenance interval applicable to your vehicle.

“Oil Maintenance Required Soon” is just a poor choice of wording...

Exactly, however I think its worse that that. I believe it is a purposeful attempt to deceive the owner and generate income.
If you didnt have much experience with automotive you would be driving your 4R to the dealership for an unneeded oil change. It should say "Maintenance Required". My wife's Honda 2018 TLX SHAWD says that and has a codes that specifically detail what needs to be done. Oil, or Oil and Filter, Rotate tires, Change diff. oil etc. How hard would it be for Toyota to do that ? Instead the app has the same maintenance item listed several times at the same milage point. Didn't anybody bother to check it before they released it?
This wording is just another example of how Toyota creates situations with their products designed to separate the owner from their money.
A couple examples:
the craptastic windshield (there are people here that are on there 4th windshield)
$900 door handles (cannot be replaced without replacing the entire door panel)
.

Well, that answers that. Doesn’t answer why OP states 4400 miles and then 13000 miles between light. OP reset light and forgot, maybe…
