“Oil Maintenance Required” Too Soon Issue

2020 5Runner SR5 Premium… Using TRD filter and Mobil1

4400 - Changed oil/filter, Reset oil Maintenance Minder
13,000 - Changed oil/filter, Reset oil Maintenance Minder (April 2021)
18,000 - July 2021 Getting “Oil Maintenance Required” on start up.

What is up with this ?

Is this based on usage or mileage?

I thought it was a 10k oil interval based on mileage only?

Any shared experiences would be appreciated.

The light comes on about every 5000 miles. Yes, you are right that the oil is changed every 10,000 miles, but there is an earlier maintenance at 5000 miles that mainly consists of a tire rotation, no oil change.

Did it really say "oil maintenance required" or just "maintenance required." I've never seen "oil maintenance required."

Says "Oil Maintenance Required" on the screen between the speedo and tach.
You have to press the back button the see the other screens.

I don't have enough miles/experience with my 4runner. However, my understanding is that all modern oil maintenance minder systems use an algorithm that is more complex than simply miles or time. Rather, they use mileage, time, engine rpm, oil temperature, etc. The higher end luxury brands actually have additional sensors (oil viscosity, transparency, etc..) to feed into the algorithm.

I know for a fact my 2012 Honda Accord used more than simply mileage to determine change interval. It is also apparent from your quoted mileages that Toyota does too. You went 4400 miles before light, then 8600 miles before light, and 5000 miles before light for the last.

If your driving patterns have changed and the duty cycle results in higher load, higher rpm, short trips that never warm up the oil, and other factors in some combination it would result in the need to change the oil sooner.

I would not recommend just resetting the maintenance minder and moving on till 10,000. I would change the oil and if you are really curious, send a sample in for analysis. For the cost and time of changing your oil it's really not worth not changing it when you are at 5,000 miles and the vehicle is stating it should be changed.

Nope, it’s just a 5,000 mile meter. On older models it will blink when getting close and then stay on solid at 5k. No idea what the newer trucks display but there is no oil life indicator.

My 2021 went off at 44XX too. Haven't hit 5000 yet so we'll see if it doesn't something special.

Yup, every ~5000mi it suggests an oil change. They never changed the intervals to match up with synthetic oil increments.
