Is the 2021 Venture “worth it” in the current market?

Hey all!

I was all set to buy a used 4runner 6 months ago but had some circumstances that prevented that. So here I am, buying in literally the worst time to buy.

I’ve never purchased a new vehicle in my 30 years of buying and it sort of pains me. But buying used right now is insanity (used 4runners are selling either above, at, or slightly below msrp of a new 4runner).

“So why buy right now?” We made a promise to my 16 year old that he would inherit my 2012 Pilot when he was set to drive (which is mid August).

I just put a deposit down on a silver 2021 Venture that is set to begin production today and have a bit of “buyers remorse”. I love the vehicle. Love how it drives. Love how it looks. And I plan to own it “forever”.

Is this Venture package worth it considering the market today? Should I consider an sr5 premium? Something else?

Thanks for your thoughts!

If that’s the package you like then stick with that. There is no better or worse package or deal, just get what you prefer.

I was looking at trd off-road and sr5 premium last september. Ended up with an sr5 premium xp package. Was able at the time to get most of the cost of the xp add on package taken off. The trd had crawl control (don’t want or need it), and locking diff but only in 4lo. I used the locking diff in my pickup often during the winter or in sand at the beach but only in 2wd, since 4runner lockers don’t work like that they were not as important to me. Don’t like non functional hood scoops so that was a plus for the sr5. Do love the trd wheels, and pretty aggressive tires my xp came with. I would of gotten a locker and street tires with the off-road.

In the end your truck is going to cost you 4-6k more than it would of during more normal times. If you keep it forever then no big deal. Just get what you prefer. I would say the Venture is a nice package though especially at msrp. I would not of bought mine at msrp because they up charged everything to much.

I own the 2020 venture in Barcelona red. Love the truck, but in retrospect would have probably picked TRD Off-road. The only main difference (non-visual) is (1) silver TRD wheels and (2) cargo basket. The wheels alone would cost about $2000 for the set and the basket would cost about $500. I use the cargo basket a lot on our trips. If you plan to off-road the truck, Toyota’s gimmicks like crawl control and multi terrain select are worth it. I was recently on the trail with folks that had Marlin Crawler dual cases with final ratio of 200:1+ and the crawl control enabled me to roll with them when conquering big granite boulders. Multi-terrain select is also very useful when rock crawling. But again you get those features on ORP. Price wise, I paid $44k for the truck (pre tax and financing) in 2020. ORP could be had for $39k back then.

I also have a deposit on a silver Venture and previously owned a 2016 Limited and also a 2019 Tacoma TRD Pro. For me, Venture in silver with black accents everywhere and matte black TRD wheels is worth the step up from ORP, but I’ll add my own mile leveling and aggressive tires than pay the Pro price.

I was able to find a dealer at MSRP and it was built last week and waiting for delivery. Look around and you may find a dealer selling at MSRP. I’m driving 350 miles to get it, but worth the savings.

Isn’t it cheaper to buy another 2012 Pilot?
