Greetings everyone. I am new here and am currently looking for a 5th Gen 4Runner. I am eying a 2018 Trail Premium right now.
I was curious about this air pump that Toyota started installing after 2012. I understand that, if it were to somehow fail, the 4x4 would not work anymore until the pump got fixed. I hear they are really reliable in the 5th Gen 4Runners.
My question is, is there a way to completely remove and/or bypass this air pump? I am told it is just for emissions on startup. Thanks in advance.
Secondary Air Injection system is not reliable. I had to replace Bank1 valve already because it failed open at 42,000 miles. It threw check engine and traction off lights and OBD2 scan confirmed permanent code. This system sucks and moisture its worst enemy but components are easy to replace on 5th gen 4R. As for bypassing it there are no posts here but kits are available online from random vendors. Some GX-460 members done the bypass but obviously it is different engine.
Every time I’ve replaced spark plugs I throw a P2443 code for the Secondary Air Injection Valve stuck closed. It’s been a wiring problem. First time, wire pulled out the back of the plug going into the sensor next to the air valve. Had to cut and splice in a new plug. Second time, one of the wires pulled out of a butt splice, so had to redo the splice. There is great value having Gracie change the spark plugs. Her hands are much smaller than mine.
