What part is this?

I've heard a bit of a metal rattling on the 4Runner lately. I thought after my most recent oil change I had not tightened the skid plate up all the way. I got under it and attempted to tighten it up and it was all tight. I heard the rattle a few more times and this morning this part fell off after a bump in the road. Does anyone know what part it is and where it came from? Heat shield or skid for something?

Kind of looks like a KDSS plate, but can’t tell. If it is, it came from the drivers side, just inside of the rocker panel, toward the middle of the truck.

I second that it looks like the KDSS skid.

Response appreciated, but I've only got a lowly SR5, so I don't think that's it. What part is this?

Looks like it's made to either fit in front of or behind the air dam here.

You're right though, not likely to fit there.

Looks like some type of skid plate and not a heat shield because its painted.

Maybe part of the gas tank skid?

I thought so too. But I took a pic of mine and they’re similar but that ain’t it.

How would you conclude that “since it seems like you know” from “nope”?

I just know it doesn’t go where you pointed to in your original post, that’s all.
I may have overlooked that part while under my truck, don’t recognize it right off. I don’t have kdss, so can chime in there.
Heat shielding is usually reflective..
Maybe something near fuel tank or possibly near the rear diff?
^^^ Speculation there!

What area are you looking at here? Passenger side? That's where I believe it fell from. Mine might be a bit deformed as I believe my passenger rear ran it over or knocked it out of the way. It's a little bent.

Thanks for the ideas for checking in the rear. I concur. It's not from the front skid. I replaced my rusty stock skid with a trd one to avoid rust. I used your handy how to post on fixing the bolt holes.
