No, you don’t want a 6 speed auto in a 4Runner

Doing some research just for kicks. Heard many reports on here of gear hunting with the 5AT. The 6AT in the Tundra (A760F) has the exact same ratios plus one higher OD gear. Doesn’t seem like that would help.

A760F:

3.520 - 1st
2.042
1.400
1.000
0.716
0.586 - 6th

Now, take a look at the 8AT (AE80F) they’re putting in the 2021 Land Cruisers:

This is the main reason you want a 5 speed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JteXnrxPQJo

I had a 6 speed in my 2011 Avalon and it was nice having 2 overdrive speeds.
It narrowed the big gap between the gears. You could run lower axle gears with the 6 speed to keep the top gear rpm the same.

That Tundra has a chunky 5.7 v8 pushing it down the road..

All what's needed is the 6-speed from the 4Runner's overseas twin, the LC Prado

The 200 series 8-speed is nice, especially when you start upsizing tires. Only wish Toyota would stop screwing with the transmission logic that unnecessarily brings it down to 1st gear all the time.
