Just ordered the 83L ROAM case. Ill need to do some creative fabrication to mount this thing. Its just so annoying to have to do this on a $300+ product.

Ill post back when i fabricate a solution. Hopefully it's not just ratchet straps. lol

Thinking on the lines of a aluminum bracket or latch system. Would love for it to be easily removed.

Well after 6 hours and 2 trips to Home Depot i got it mounted. Holy crap i shouldn't have to put this much effort into mounting a $300 box on the top of my 4Runner.....

First i fabricated aluminum mounts that just wouldn't work with the places available to mount on the ROAM box. So i ended up going with plywood and just getting it up there.

I'm extremely disappointed in ROAM's lack of mounting options and the ones they have are really only for straps and not even close to the spacing needed for any standard roof rack. Lucky i got a set of Victory rails but even then....

I will likely try and find some sheet metal, maybe some in aluminum sheet to get this done just right. Not easy to find in thick 10x20 in aluminum let alone bigger. This way i can make a less bulky easy to remove mounting system.

I have 105L ROAM case attached to my BajaRack. I drilled two holes near the rear corners of the case, then used heavy duty zip ties to laterally hold the case from it's straps onto the rack. Its been on for over a year. No issues with stability of the case, water getting in, or anything damaging to the items within. Its has been through severe thunder storms, extremely windy conditions, very bumpy roads, and intense city driving. The only con is that if there are a lot of bugs out, expect to have a monumental amount of splats on the case.

Nice setup! I'm looking for a way to mount a roam box on a prinsu as well without drilling holes on the box if possible . How secure are the sherpa mounts? Not much info out there regarding these mounts but from the pics it looks like someone can just unscrew the bolts on the mount and walk away with the box?

Really? I did a maximum distance plus shipping search in my area and came back with nothing. If you have a lead on an 83L or 95L on your local offer up, I'd be happy to pay you to ship one my way.

Gotcha.

I was more hopeful there were ROAM cases now that FL has rejected the federal unemployment benefits and people are selling things to pay their bills. For my use, the ROAM boxes would be a nice to have, not a necessity, so avoiding retail price would make them palatable.

Finally got some 1/4" aluminum plate, cut to size and drilled the appropriate holes. So much better than the plywood and now i can remove much easier.

Though the box is waterproof i made a gorilla tape deflector for the seam (Icebuild up and whatnot).

Options

Sorry for not seeing this one sooner, but for the sake of those that may be looking in the future…I too was stuck looking for options to hold down a roam container on top of my rack where I didn’t have to drill into it. I ended up using these (link) and they worked out perfect. Straps fit through the small opening on each side of the case and hold it in place perfectly once fully tightened. I guess I should note that this option doesn’t afford any securities to prevent someone from coming up and taking it, but just wanted to offer up a cheap option that worked.

Those mounts from Sherpa were an awesome find btw…I’ll have to remember those for future rack mods.

I looked at the Sherpa mounts, and unless you have a Sherpa rack or identical thay wont work and they may need to be shaved down.

For the amount of time and money to get this mounted i could have bought a whole Sherpa roof rack and mounts. lol

The mounts are just bolted into the bars using t nuts so they aren’t very secure. You can easily unbolt them with a 10 or 12mm. You can probably use those torx bolts with the pin in the center for a little more security but then again, someone can just unbolt the crossbars from the rack intself if they really wanted it

No matter how well you secure it to the bar, a 7/16 wrench is all you need to remove the bar from the roofrack. You could replace the 1/4-20 hex bolts with Torx, Tri-groove, or spanner head screws, or the asymmetrical drive button heads that require a McMaster driver.

Its so hard to 100% eliminate the possibility of something getting stolen. Best we can do is protect against the unprepared or spur of the moment thief.

I have done a few things to make it harder or make it more time consuming to remove. This way they set off my alarm and i can come running. If not ill at least catch them on dashcam as they try to run away with 100lb box. lol.

I mounted my roam to my prinsu using the Sherpa mounts but am considering using a cable lock system to tie it to the rack. But like someone already said. If they really want it they are gonna get it. Just Keeps honest people honest
