Used cost more than new?

Just recently thinking about coming back to a 4Runner, would be trading in my 2016 Tacoma. It looks like at most dealerships, the cost of their used 4Runners are more than the cost of new. Am I seeing this correctly or am I truly an idiot? Not sure how high the markup is over MSRP on average, if at all. Planned to start reaching out to dealers next week.

You're not going crazy. Buying used cost as much as buying new right now.

It's not just 4Runners, many used cars are selling for more than new.

Two examples:
1. I placed an order for a new Toyota RAV4 hybrid at the end of May, due to be delivered early August. Trim level is XLE Premium and price is $35K. My dealer has a used 2019 RAV4 XLE (non-premium, non-hybrid) with 37K miles, asking for the same price as my new one, $35K.

2. My son bought a new Kia Telluride a year ago. He can sell it for far more than he paid for it. The current wait time for a new Telluride is over a year (!) so people are willing to pay the extra to have a vehicle now.

Back when I couldn't decide on a Tacoma or a 4Runner, the 4Runner I test drove ('19 ORP w/26k miles) was priced $2700 more than what I was quoted for mine - including the $3k "market adjustment".

I've seen some "market adjustments" posted that are $25K over MSRP for new!

We got our 2019 SR5 for $43K. Bought it about 2 hrs after they put it out on the lot! Only 17K miles. EVERYTHING in a 4Runner I've seen since has been more with 2x the mileage! Paid $23K for my wife's 2014 RAV4 with only 23K miles=that was a decent price if not a bargain!

you are correct, I was looking for 2019 used and they were pricing out higher than a 2021 new!

Remember, it will be hard to find one new at MSRP!

Is anything selling at msrp?

Dealership called today saying they got a used 2021 Limited in. Immediately rushed over to go look at it but someone else was signing the papers on it right as I walked in. Getting really tired of this s***t.

New vs Used

In my most recent experience every used car was going for the price of a new one. Even the salesman was telling me if was better to buy new than used. Duh!! Yes, I paid almost MSRP for our 4Runner but they also gave me almost 7k over what I paid for our trade in. No complaints here.

Just picked up our new one last Thursday. New is definitely cheaper where I’m from. Paid MSRP but got the wildland savings.

If you are close to NM I know they have quite a bit of inventory coming in next month.

If you special order one with a pre-negotiated price, you can get one for MSRP or even less if there are applicable discounts.

in 2017 it was about the same where used 4runners were only a few thousand less than a new one. They hold value extremely well,

I'm seeing it big time with Raptor trucks as well. Used $70-80K for 2019! They hold their value as well as 4 Runners. But this current market is unprecedented. Not just the lack of chips, but after shutting down factories for so long, the lack of cars that were made is catching up to the market.

Limiteds are so hard to find that I started looking at used and anything 4 wheel is selling at $55-57k....redonculous
