This. Despite frame recalls and history, these vehicles (even the newest of them) are still rust prone. It's unfortunate. I already see it after two winters and only a few Sierra runs with meticulous cleaning after each trip. Otherwise, it's desert dry all the time here and garaged. If I were in MI like the OP and wanted to max out longevity, I would garage my 4Runner in the winter and get a beater Subaru with Blizzaks.

This is what I do....the '05 is the winter beater while the '17 is in hibernation.

Move to the Southwest U.S. where you will have no problems with rust. Have 265K miles on my wife’s 2014 SR5 and I do all the maintenance. I’d get my wife a new one and take hers, but waiting for this disrupted market to settle down. Her 4Runner should easily go 300K miles and probably 400K.

One more thing:

Careful with mods and aftermarket parts.

Now dealing with my Shrock gas tank skid that I long suspected of rubbing into the gas tank. Yup. Has rubbed. Pretty much everywhere!

Now fighting the skid trying to modify it so it drops 1/4 in. And also creating opening in the side protectors so I can actually see everywhere if it rubs in the future and be able to hose the inside.

Seemingly small things like this may cause big headaches down the road.

And waste a weekend if addressed timely: on to Home Depot, again

I recommend Xpel paint protection film. Well worth the investment if your planning to keep 4RUnner 4Ever.

Talk to your dealer and skip all dealer prep, do not let them touch it with any type of polisher. Find a good detailer in your area and have them to a professional paint coating, this will end up costing a lot closer to the $800-1300 range. Unfortunately new vehicles need plenty of correction, and even more so if the dealer touches it. You can't go in thinking that no correction is needed just because it's a new vehicle, sad to say.

Depending on your region, there may be shops that specialize in fluid film under coatings, basically they just have a solid system setup and get everything covered. The fluid film is something you can do your self but the convenience of these shops make it worth while.

Yep. +1

Told my dealer give it to me dirty (ha) not even an automatic wash. It’s got really nice paint no swirls. Haven’t decided what I’m going to do with it yet as far as ceramic or PPF but I am limiting myself to spray washes.

Husky floor mats, fluid film every fall, and ceramic spray wax 3-4x a year(I prefer Turtle Wax spray). If you have soft tech seats , I use 303 on them.

I just turned 42k on a 2016 and it looks almost new.

I love this!

I’m planning on getting the truck ceramic coated. The place I’m going to take it does a full paint prep before ceramic application.

Should I still tell the dealer “don’t touch it”?

You can always just ask the detailer to see what they say, I know a few higher end detailers that will specifically instruct you to receive the vehicle with NO dealer prep.

Keep in mind I'm talking mostly high end cars and high end coatings, I was quoted $1200 for my 300 mile 4runner, decided it wasn't worth it for me and started collecting pin strips instead.

There is a joke somewhere in here about pro owners too afraid to enjoy their vehicle and instead spend all of their time preserving their pro specific paint color for the next owner

With how garbage the paint is make sure you get a clear bra asap. You'll pick up rock chips on the test drive if you're lucky.

I took my 2021 TRD PRO off the delivery truck with 1 mile on it and brought it directly to the shop and had the vehicle covered in Xpel ultimate paint protection film. The whole hood, front bumper, front fenders, a-pillars, front edge of roof line, door cups etc. Then the entire vehicle was coated in Xpel fusion ceramic coat. The paint looks super deep and glossy, even when it's dirty haha.
