Anyone on fence between 5th gen 22’ or wait for potential madness by Toyota for 2023

So im ready with loan and big down payment to get my first ever Toyota and a 4Runner at that. I’m looking to get a pro. If I was ready early in the year before this crazy market erupted I would be in a 21’ already. But the circumstance led to me being ready till a month ago. Soon realized it’s not a smart move to buy right now even at msrp. Will be giving away my hard earned money for simply not wanting to wait. Patience is a virtue someone said. So now I decided to wait for the 22ish lol.

I’m thinking if I’m going to wait for the market to normalize a bit. I’m guessing 6months. I would probly be searching to buy early next year. Than you have the potential all new everything 23’. It’s a head scratching situation to be in when trying to become a Toyota and 4Runner guy for the first time.

So question is. Anyone who is thinking about a 22’. Are you gona wait as long as possible. Guessing around this time next year we would know if the all new 4Runner will be in 2023. Or are you simply buying the 22’ regardless.

Yes I know some will say about waiting, and than waiting, finally waiting again. I’m only thinking of maybe waiting till this time next year. If no news on all new 23’. I will buy the 22’ or even 21’ if still sitting on lots brand new.

Don't count on any new '21 4Runners being available in six months. They are selling as fast as they come in, or most likely before they even come to the dealer. My local dealer shows incoming 4Runners on their web site and ALL of them are "reserved", meaning someone has already put a deposit on them. None are "available" for purchase.

Most dealers I have talked to recently are no longer taking special orders for a '21. Thus, my suggestion is to place an order for a '22 soon. It will take three to six months to come in, but then you will be guaranteed to have one; no more waiting. With a special order, you can get exactly what you want: trim level, color, options, etc. Be sure when you order you have a pre-negotiated price in writing so the dealer doesn't add on things after the fact.

I ordered a '21 RAV4 at the end of May, with a pre-negotiated price including a Costco discount. It is due in just a couple of weeks.

First, Pro. You are paying a boatload of money for a 3,000$ suspension upgrade and a special color. For 4,000, you can get a better suspension than the Pro.

Second, you cannot order a 4R the way you can order a Wrangler. All you can do is to get as close as possible within the dealer allocation or have a dealer trade with another. But you are not ordering a particular 4R from Tahara.

Third, the rest is a really interesting question.

2022: possibly last of the old breed. I wanted an old school, dependable offroader. So for me, this is great.
2023: possibly a very different 4R. Lots of ??? though. Will it be a Wrangler/Bronco competitor? Or will it drift more towards highway-friendly features? Will it still be made in Tahara?

Financially, if Toyota decides to make the 4R too civilized, 5th gen prices may remain high for a long time though not as crazy as FJ, I guess. However, if the next gen comes with BoF, solid rear, and 35" tires all the while offering better mpg and more advanced non-offroad tech, then the prices of 5th gen may come under great pressure within a few years as no particular demographic would have a reason to prefer a 5th to a 6th gen.

So a tough choice indeed.

Going back to 2010, the 4R was smoking the Wrangler. The Rubicon was really nothing more but a platform to build for rock crawling with poor engine and transmission to boot. The early Raptors were not all that special either. Now times have changed a great deal, with both the Wrangler and the Raptor greatly improved and then there is the Bronco. So if Toyota decides to keep the fight, the next gen 4R has to be a very interesting vehicle. In that case, I would expect the price to be very interesting as well....

If the Turbo I4 rumors prove true for the 6th gen, the 5th gen 4R will majorly hold their value.

What if it’s this motor but with great features. Bigger tires 35s, Disconnect sway bar, high tech inside etc. well a truly loaded off road rig offset the rumored turbo engine?

agree buy what you want now or you can keep waiting. The Pros have great residual value if you decide to sell within a few years. If you plan on doing after market suspension and more mods go with the off road model. I'm waiting for the next gen tundra, sequoia or 4runner. I have a 17 sr5 prem modded the way like it, the 21 LED head and foglights are great. Would like apple car play but thatll probably be an aftermarket unit.

Buy what you want now and enjoy it, if you can get a Pro at MSRP buy it.

Not so as this thread shows: Recent Build Dates vs actual Delivery Date

But for a 4Runner, it can take awhile so you have to be patient.

2025

I'm holding out to maybe 2025. At that point, I'm hoping the craziness will calm down, if not, I'll just hold on to my 2005 for a wee bit longer. I'm in no hurry. In 2025, I will have driven the same 4R for 20 years. And no, I'm not paying over MSRP, or even MSRP. I paid invoice for my 4R, not planning to pay anything above MSRP. If the dealership doesn't agree on the terms, I guess I'll buy something else...at invoice. I'm ok with that because I'm paying cash and someone else will want my money. I refuse to participate in this stupid car market we are in right now. We put in an order for a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek in April, it was delivered in mid May. I refused to pay above MSRP and got invoice pricing. Yes. This was at the start of the craziness. I got quotes for the limited package without sunroof for $33,500. I had done my research and knew what the invoice price for that vehicle with options and tax, title, and license. I paid $30,550.50. I saved $2950. When they thought they were at least going to make money off the loan, extended warranty, extras(paint protection, front bumper liner, etc). I took out the cashiers check and they seemed surprised Moral of the story, be an ******* at the negotiating table. Thats what it took.

All the new Toyota’s have been incredibly lame and dumb. They don’t make cool cars anymore. New land cruiser and tundra suck. The pro will be VERY lame next to any Trx or raptor. The Tacoma sucks hard compared to a diesel bison or gladiator. Toyota makes very mild lame cars now and other companies have improved reliability. I honestly would get a diesel rubi gladiator and never look back instead of my pretty heavily modded 5th gen.

Second part, I trade commodities for a living. And I would bet dollars to doughnuts inflation isn’t going anywhere. The plans permeating from Washington are going to make dollars much less valuable. The best thing you could do is pay as little down payment on a truck and lock in the lowest rate on the biggest loan possible. Then pay the more valuable dollars you agreed to back in the less valuable dollars we will get tomorrow. We are increasing dollars in circulation by 20 to 50 percent a year. Inflation will follow.

If they put the V6 engine in the 6th gen 4runner that is going in the 2022 Tundra then put me on the waiting list now for a 2023 4runner

2022 Toyota Tundra's new engine sure looks like a twin-turbo V6 - Roadshow

It could be a good while longer until prices fall...

If the dealers don't gouge you too badly and you're comfortable with the price, I would get one now if you can and you really want one. Or wait those 6 months and see how you feel about it then.

In my experience, holding out for an update on something that's been out for a long time isn't worth it. You can wait years and years instead of actually owning and enjoying the thing. Good thing is since 4 runners hold value so well you could sell what you buy to help with purchasing a new one if they do finally come out with cool upgrades.

I bet you'll be waiting until 2025 for the new 4R and buying now in this inflated market is not so smart imho.
