I will be checking out a used 2010 limited. Are there any known issues? For example timing belts on 4.7 V8s, or LBJ on 3rd gens. I know rust is always something to be on the lookout for. Anything else?

Since it is “limited” it probably has “x-reas” system (shocks) and those shocks maybe leaking with higher mileage \age, check for possibly sized brake calipers (front), but only if that 4Runner lived in the rust belt.

No other “issues” that I am aware of… maybe others will chime in…

We live in the rust belt, so I'll definitely be on the lookout for rust. As for the x-reas system, is there an easy way to tell if it has it?

The timing belt is supposed to be replaced at 90,000 on the 4.7, which isn't really an issue, but bad owners rolling the dice and not changing the belt is an issue.

I have a 2010 Limited and just recently am experiencing the touch screen dying. It had 150K when I bought it, and touch screen always needed to pressed a hair firmer than a typical touch screen, but worked fine. Then a few weeks ago, maybe due to heat I've read, the right side basically doesn't work, and the rest of it works like every 20th press. So see how responsive it is and if it requires more pressure than typical. If you replace with an OEM I hear it's around $2.5-$3K, and aftermarkets are still $800 or so...

Rear hatch rubber contact pad is known to fall off, as mine has, but it works fine so not a big deal.

XREAS on mine showed signs of some oil seeping on the shocks, but not much and still worked fine up until I replaced with Bilstein 6112/5160.

Press Audio then SAT, mine flashes "Antenna" and sometimes the red SOS button on the ceiling lights up, which makes me think my shark fin antenna may have an issue, thought he navigation works just fine.

Rubber splash guards rip off often, so peak in front fender wells to inspect.

If you check the 4WD modes, it has a dial setup by the gear shifter. Put it in Neutral to engage 4Lo. Don't make tight turns on the street when in 4Hi or 4Lo as the transfer case is locked up and will put some stress on the drivetrain and tires. Prob wouldn't break anything, but avoid if you can. Remember it is full time 4WD, but the transfer case is unlocked until you put it in 4Hi or 4Lo.

Check the map version, I think mine is way out of date. Look up the latest version 2010-2013's can take.

When testing it out, roll windows down or open door carefully and roll forward then back and repeat a few times to listen for loud'ish clunks, as it may be a worn driveshaft u-joint.

All Limited's came with XREAS. The shock bodies are red and there are hydraulic lines and pumps on the outsides of the frame rails under the door areas. Works well overall. Mine had 3" front and 1.25" rear spacers, I off roaded it hard (even a jump with HD rear springs hehe) and it held up pretty well overall.

It has a timing chain so no worries there.

Also, DuroBumps are a must, even if you don't plan on off roading it much. Makes for such a smoother ride when the suspension compresses.

The one I'm looking at came with the, I'm assuming standard radio. It isn't touch screen. I'd probably look into replacing it with something more modern down the road.

2010 Limited with 150,000 miles

Performed great, especially on mtn roads that were twisty as it's designed to do. Off road was surprisingly decent for being stock with spacers. I drive pretty hard both on and off road, and was pretty impressed with it overall.

Honestly, if you're not going to load it up and either do hard trails that require more ground clearance or bomb it in high speed dezert settings, the spacer setup would not need to be upgraded, except to get DuroBumps. Main reasons I upgraded were because I have a fam of 5 I load it up and will eventually get a rear tire carrier as well, wanted more ground clearance for more difficult trails, and got the HD springs both for maintaining ground clearance while loaded up but also to not bottom out as easily when I am going fast in the dez.

x-reas system is basically shocks that are interconnected, so leaks would look like any shocks that is leaking, I never had x-reas on any of my 4Runners, but from what I know people usually just replace them with better aftermarket shocks when x-reas shock (s) starts to leak.

Timing belt is definitely not an issue.. especially when it comes to Toyota 4.7 V8 timing belt :-)

I have a 2012 limited with 155,000 miles and here are the things I've experienced. Overall it's a very solid truck and the maintenance schedule has been followed to a T

- xreas all 4 corners replaced at 152,000 miles. no aftermarket parts were available (I wanted bilstein) and I didn't want to wait since it's my DD so I replaced. Cost $3,200 CAD at toyota dealer. only right rear was weeping but I did all 4

- OEM factory skid plates. I replaced the two engine skid plates and fuel tank skid plate (I upgraded the fuel tank to a full tank skid). there was some slight corrosion on the OEM ones after 150,000 miles so I just replaced them all since I got a good deal on the parts. pretty easy DIY if you have the tools

- valve cover gaskets, spark plug seals and cam shaft gaskets. replaced at 154,000 miles. I noticed a very slight weep on the driver's side and it had never been done so I brought it into toyota to do this. cost was $600 CAD after tax,labour and parts

other than the above it's all regular maintenance / wear and tear items like brakes and tires. honestly though the replacements I did above were not 'required' I could have operated the truck with the above issues for probably another 50,000 miles easily before they became bad but I like to repair things before they get bad

Blown left front shock at 85,000. Replaced all four with Bilstein 5100’s.

Slight oil weeping on both valve cover gaskets. No action necessary.
Lots of paint chips on forward facing surfaces.

I would not trade my 2010 for a newer one.

Didn't realize there were so many recalls on these. My headlights are hazed a bit, mostly on the horizontal surface portions. I'll have to checkout if my truck had these done or not. Thanks for listing these.

Oops, I shoulda put TSB for everything except the airbag and warranty repair for the liftgate struts. Not sure what got into me, but I am on vacation.
