I find it nearly impossible to believe. I've been suckered too many times and wasted thousands of dollars over the past 2 decades by people claiming XYZ exhaust doesn't drone or barely drones "you don't even know it's there!". I then buy it and what do you know, it's drones terribly. I made this mistake with my 96 Maxima, 2003 G35, 2012 WRX, and most recently our 2020 4runner.

I would not consider this Magnaflow exhaust unless I heard it myself and RODE in the 4runner. There are lots of videos out there for the 4runner TRD exhaust and none of them come close to showing you just how loud it is in the interior, especially if you're riding in the back. When you load up the back of the 4runner, the exhaust drone actually gets louder which is the exact opposite of what I thought would happen.

Does anyone know if Toyota has a separate resonator on the 4R exhaust or just a muffler?

It's just a large, single "suitcase" style muffler. Same goes for the TRD exhaust. There is not forward or aft resonator and really isn't much room for one. Probably why the muffler is so large.

The Magnaflow system might have less drone than the TRD setup, but it still drones at all the same rpms as the TRD setup which means it drones often under load, slight inclines, and basically anytime the rpms are around 1,500-2,000rpms and mild throttle is being applied which is basically a majority of the daily driving rpms. Screw that. I also note that many say the system gets louder as it breaks in, just like any other exhaust including the TRD. I didn't find the TRD exhaust bad until around 2000 miles. Then it got real deep and drony. It also gets louder when ambient temps are above 80 degrees. This is pretty normal for any exhaust (thermal characteristics).

Quotes from the thread:

- "Put 300 miles on it today and so far very pleased. In quietest configuration it doesn’t really drone around 2k which is fwy cruising. 1500rpm under load it drones a bit but sounds good with windows down around town."

- "Cruising at highway speed doesn't seem to be that loud. Seems noisiest when driving up slight incline and keeping the revs low."

- "The pro would drone me out around 50mph cruising and was almost unbearable going up a hill. The magnaflow while still loud is a much more pleasant note on the ears at those speed."

- "Open throttle was much louder than stock TRD Pro kinda hurting my ears. However, a plus was the droning I despised while cruising on highway was noticeably quieter and a lower note than the stock TRD Pro exhaust. Not significantly quieter though. So yesterday felt like I traded one evil for another... Debated if i would put the stock TRD Pro exhaust back on. As of today, the exhaust seems to have gotten quieter than yesterday with about 200 miles on it. Driving on highway between 40mph to 85mph felt noticeablyquieter than the TRD Pro exhaust. Drone there but very faint and deeper tone. Open throttle when merging on freeway still loud but not as bad as day one, didnt hurt my ears as before (maybe after day one I became deaf and think it's quiet now? j/k )."

I can second the suggestion. Currently running 4.88's and weigh in at 5940lbs with a full tank and me. Rarely ever down shifts on the highway anymore.
WAYYYY cheaper and more reliable than a supercharger...just saying.

Dead on with the 4.10 gears. This is de rigeur for Dodge (RAM) trucks putting 4.10’s in the V6 (1500) or any gasser (2500+) configurations.

Really just have to shift it between 4th and 3rd yourself for a smoother hill/mountain climb. That's my experience with V5 and V6 engines. They don't have a lot of get up and go for climbing at highway speeds and protest on cruise control if just in drive.
