Everything is on backorder
I ordered a GOBI roof rack March3oth, i was told the wait time would be 12 weeks, got an email few weeks later that orders have been pushed back to 16 weeks. When i reached out a few weeks ago for an update i got a generic letter stating that due to the pandemic there are material shortages and things are further delayed.
Im between canceling my order and purchasing a different rack, not my first choice, or waiting it out. I do have a trip to MOAB in October and would need a rack by then. Ive tried to call but no answer.
Has anyone been in contact with them or knows anything more about the delays. Plus if i cancel i dont wana be charged the 500 fee.

The only thing I wouldn't like about the situation is the lack of communication. I've ordered several made to order items, car and not, and everything is taking much longer to be made and shipped. That wait time is not outlandish for how things are right now.

I ordered my C4 skids on March 6th prior to a price increase on steel with a 10% discount and I did not receive them until July 23rd. (4.5 months) Seems par for the course over the past year.
I was fortunate enough to get a brand new C4 diff skid with the e-locker guard off the forum for about a $100 savings and received it in a week. Good idea to stay on top of the for sale thread.

I also had horrible customer service, and a total lack of communication when I ordered my ladder. Pretty much sealed the deal that I'd go elsewhere for a rack. Ended up with an UpTop Alpha, and absolutely love it. Night and day difference in the customer experience.
Another friend ordered a ladder from GOBI, and had the same poor experience. So I know it isn't just me.

For years now all you ever hear about GOBI are the same horror stories about months and months of waiting and bad customer service. Why does anyone still order from them? Why are they still in business? IMHO, sub par design and execution of items that are available ten times over from better vendors, cheaper and better design. Who ever orders a Gobi anything then complains has themselves to thank.

Guys, don’t buy anything on back order. Once your transaction hits, you have 60 days to dispute it if the merchant never delivers. After that, you’re SOL.
A lot of these custom fab, limited run / high demand items, and group buy orders have a long lead time and unless you have some killer benefits (a la Visa Signature/Infinite or MasterCard World) the standard dispute window is 60 days.

It's Gobi!
If you look back over the past few years you'll see a very common trend around them...long lead times. The only difference is that now they have a excuse as to why lead times are pushing. While Covid is causing a lot of disruptions in the supply chain. A company that size should have a good enough purchasing department to be able to forecast, and secure material far enough in advance to avoid these issues.

Well who knows what they’re teaching business majors now. Last I heard, holding inventory was bad and they wanted everything just-in-time.

Well, there's some truth to your statement.
I've been in purchasing for 17 years, and have been a purchasing manager at a large manufacturing company for the last 5 years. There's no such thing as JIT inventory anymore if you want to be successful in today's market. If companies are still using a JIT or Kanban system, they're going to fail. The market is too volatile to play that game. I'm purchasing 6-8 months in advance and have been for quite some time. A good purchasing department will learn to read market trends, and really leaning on their suppliers for condition updates.

Gobi doesn't charge until it ships, at least that was my experience with them.
They had staff sick during the pandemic that put them waaaaaaaay behind the normal 12-16 weeks. 20 weeks is probably a minimum, maybe longer now.

Simple search on this forum or the other 4Runner forum would've provided many owner's real world lead times. Even before COVID the leads times were long.
Placed my order on 1/20/21 and rack was delivered 7/30/21. It's easier if you go in with the expectation GOBI works on their own hippy schedule.

This is what happens when everyone is building the same exact ride. Be original or at least different, go clean with a no/show modular rack option.
