Selling TRD PRO with Magnuson Supercharger Installed?

Hello,

Looking for advice on best/easiest way to sell with the Magnuson Supercharger. (Great mod BTW).

When entering my info on Carvana I got a low offer, after entering *engine modification*

With Vroom it was much higher after giving them more info on the Supercharger.

If you were to sell a 4runner with this type of modification would you talk to dealers that install the superchargers, craigslist, this forum, or other? Looking at 2019 TRD Pro prices they are very high currently especially with low miles.

FWIW - 2019 TRD PRO White ~ 10,500 miles, Metal Tech Sliders, Magnaflow exhaust (all dealer installed) with records.

Tinted windows - wrapped SunTek front bumper/hood/mirrors.

I'd try private listing it first

My opinion, Dealers will try to look you dead in the eye and say "Oh, that's nice but it doesn't add a penny to the value" and then if you trade it or sell it to them they will increase what the price would have been by $5K or more and say "Wow, this thing is Supercharged!"... They are all pretty much morally bankrupt.

The unknown is: Does the Supercharger limit the market of people willing to pay up for your 4runner? Who knows. Some people might love it and jump on it, others might see it as "Well, this thing isn't stock anymore, so I wonder if it's going to be reliable"...

Your best bet is probably to try all of the above and see where it goes.

The problem with selling modded vehicles to dealers (physical dealers or Vroom) is two-fold: a) dealer isn't usually inclined to take the risk of mods being installed incorrectly and/or reducing reliability and b) modded vehicles generally appear to smaller buyer groups -- people that are specifically looking for those mods or are familiar with them. This means the dealer might have the vehicle sit on their lot longer, which means less velocity/turnaround and thus more cost to the dealer as the vehicle occupies space.

This basically means that you're rarely going to get a good offer and often you'll get an offer that's less than for a comparable stock vehicle.

Two most common options in this case are:

1. Sell the vehicle as-is to the dealer with the best offer. This is the fastest and easiest way, but one that nets the least amount of cash for your ride.

2. Remove the mods, return to stock and then sell. The mods can be sold separately online to make some of the money back, but this takes time and effort and there is potential cost to remove the mods.

3. Sell privately to someone in the know -- someone who's familiar with the 4Runners and is looking for the exact mods you have. This also takes time, is harder to manage financially, and overall is more of a hassle.

You have to sell it to someone (or entity) that will value it. Dealers would provide a bad ROI for your thousands in supercharger. (But would likely try to charge as if they installed it themselves).

Mods do not add value to vehicles when you sell them. It's just how it is.

Sure, someone might be willing to pay more, but as a general rule you will never get the money back out that you put in.

I suggest listing it private party if you wan to sell it as is. Otherwise, take the thing off and sell it on it's own.

Thanks for the replies -

The Vroom offer is 53,200 with the engine modification and a cracked windshield so not too bad.....

The crazy thing is I love the Supercharger more than any mod I have ever done on any vehicle and I have 5 modded cars currently mostly sports cars, so it should enhance the value IMO over a stock vehicle.

I might just wait and make sure my new vehicle is coming for sure then sell it on this site to someone that would appreciate the extra power.

Depends on the mods and the vehicle. I buy and sell sports cars all the time and certain mods command a premium of the exact money spent and then some. I try and do mods that enhance value and have had pretty good success.

Just curious — why are you selling?
I’m thinking of either putting in the supercharger since my trd pro feels so underpowered at altitude….. or selling it before I mod it and getting a rubicon 392.

I should not have used an absolute, but it's a pretty solid assumption - much more the rule than the exception. I've built a lot of cars/trucks, and you are right... some things do help, especially to the right buyer.

Won’t the 392 Rubicon still lack some power since you’re at higher altitude and won’t be as volumetric efficient as your current 4Runner with an SC. I have the SC and can’t feel it struggling to maintain speed at high altitudes.

So, if it was the 5.7 hemi I would totally agree with you. The 6.4 is a different animal and has tons of torque along the entire power band. I’ve seen videos of it driven in the mountains with barely much effort on the RPM band.

The biggest thing though is simply the fun factor of that hemi …… in sport exhaust mode it just sounds stupidly good.

The trade off of course is sacrificing Toyota reliability and losing that independent front suspension. Not to mention the price tag.

Lol — yes. Drove the Sahara unlimited with the turbo diesel. Was surprised how much I actually liked its on road manners.

And the suspension on the rubicon is even better (analogous to the Fox shocks set up in the trd pro giving it a better ride on pavement as well as off)

I placed an order for a 392 and it felt a little redundant to own both, but I might keep the 4runner, not sure...

I really like that the 4runner has hydraulic steering and just feels old school with great cargo capacity - with the M:supercharger and Magnaflow Exhuast it feels pretty powerful/visceral. I am on stock everything so not running big tires or a lift, but I was shocked at the difference in *torque* power, obviously the 392 will be a totally different level in terms of power and performance.

Here are two good vids on the M:supercharger. One has a Dyno showing the TQ gains the other discusses the companies history of working with Toyota in the past.

That’s too funny ….. that’s exactly my decision right now: keep the 4Runner and install the SC or get the 392.

I don’t understand why magnusson hasn’t yet come out with the SC for 2020 and ‘21 models — perhaps it’s a supply chain issue thanks to Covid. If it takes much longer, that may help me make the decision.
