Makes no sense to me. I cannot think of any reason to leave a vehicle running unless I’m in the middle of nowhere and I need to power rescue equipment to save a bunch of campers who are dying, which would never happen.

Completing daily reports.
Eat lunch.
Conference calls. Phone calls.
Sleep in my seat on Monday mornings after I make the 3.5 hour early morning drive to work and get there early.
Cool off.

Week before last we had a high of 115 F and a low of 95 F. Thankfully, we are at the tail end of summer. Not everyone works in doors. Welcome to my world. Also, change the oil every 5000 miles or less.

Not a regular thing for me.
At the time I had appts and on the way to work I was 1.5 hrs early so I decided to stop and take advantage of the time, catch up on some calls, research some items within the comfort of my vehicle when this occurred.

So, maybe you never find yourself in need of doing anything other than driving from point A to point B and no spare time. Everyone is not the same.

I didn’t write this for a world debate, I wrote it to inform people of this feature that is not really publicized.
It took me by surprise that it occurred.

I refer to it as a nanny feature.
Maybe it was put in place because people leave the truck running after they get out & that was so it would shut it off because people didn’t remember they left their truck running

Recharging the house battery to keep the fridge going on a hot cloudy day.

I do all the time at work, sometimes my job involves monitoring work on large construction projects or landfills. We run the vechicles all day with the AC cranked or heat in winter.

FWIW - idle time is not good for engines. On my F250 it has an idle meter that you don't see. But it's counting. Ford says all of the following are equivalent: 5,000 miles of driving, 200hrs of idle, 350 gallons of fuel burn, or 3 months of time. For commercial service, the first to be reached is time for an oil changed. That translates to 1hr of idle time equaling 25 miles of driving.

There are some other studies that show idle time on newer engines is actually worse than highway driving. Some wear comparisons showed 1hr of idle time does more wear than 120 miles of highway driving. The reasons are complicated, but they basically are the result of inefficient fuel burn leaving residue on cylinder walls that reduces lubrication and more blow by from lower compression and heat not sealing the piston rings to the cyl walls well. So long idle times are not good for modern engines. Even warming up for more than a minute or two ("dozens of seconds" is what Toyota says) will cause more engine wear than driving.

I get that idling happens and is part of normal use. But extended idle times should be accounted for when thinking about maintenance. If you're idling a lot - I'd change to 5k mile oil changes. If you're idling all day like a service truck might - I'd change the oil ever 2-3 months regardless of miles.

Also - just one crazy point of reference - my F250 was from an oil field service company. It had only 105k miles on it. But it has 17,000 idle hours on the counter. So that's roughly the equivalent of 500k miles of engine wear! That's why ex fleet trucks are something to be cautious of. And it's why mine needed a cat and EGR system cleaning at relatively low odo miles.

Trying to find out if this can be deprogrammed….. it probably can’t!
See pic of owners manual.

Lately, like when I was waiting in line at Costco for gasoline Ive been shutting off my engine instead of idling. I wish my 4R had the automatic engine shutoff/restart feature to save some fuel. My wife’s 2018 TXL has it. Thats a big car with AWD and it gets “great” fuel economy. On the highway it will get 32mpg.

20-21 Automatic Engine Shut Off Feature

Well, if you look at the 4Runner on one end of a spectrum, and these 32mpg unibody SUVs on the other, the only significant point in between would be the newest Ford trucks around 25-26 mpg, in my opinion.

And to do that, Ford uses metals that are extremely expensive to replace, and tiny turbo engines.

Now, whether or not 4Runner type customers wouldn’t want expensive panels and tiny turbo engines is a question I can’t answer, but my hunch is that they would not. I do not.

The Japanese makers are having very interesting reactions to the EV craze and everything that is going on with it. They’re kinda all over the place. My point is that it’s hard to tell right now where they’re going, whereas with US makers we all know we’ll it’s going to EV as quickly as possible.

Mazda is really bucking the trend. They’re about to release a new line of straight 6 engines, including a diesel version and a hybrid version, that will be mounted longitudinally like a real performance car. The new engines are going in cars and even SUVs, which should be crazy interesting and compete directly with BMW on all fronts. Mazda is literally going backwards, back to a previous era of developing internal combustion engines and going away from EV as a brand. If you know anything about watches, I liken this to Mazda being like the Swiss and digging their heels in. Not out of surprise or ignorance, but more to have something special that enthusiasts will be able to love in the face of an EV industry that “has less soul”, if that makes sense.

All this said, it’s a very interesting question: what will my Japanese car be like in 5-10 years. Only a few cars do we know the answer right now. Personally I hope Toyota keeps the 4Runner “relatively ancient” and bullet proof with older tech like we have now. It could stand improvements, but keep it simple, rugged, and slightly overbuilt. I think economy could go up to 24-25 mpg, but I would not hope for more yet or the 4Runner is possibly ruined.

Laugh all you want. After hurricane Sandy the inverter in my Limited plus a 100’ extension cord gave me lights, tv and a heated mattress pad for almost two months! I did have to run downstairs every now and then to turn it all back on though

Not laughing but actually disappointed I didn’t get to buy one of these before my Chevy Volt got totaled with precisely zero body damage.

25 mpg should be pretty doable. Lc300 gets around 19mpg mixed vs 17 in the 4R . Give us 400hp in a 4R and I'll live with 19/21/20.

It seems like you can disable auto shut off by just locking it from outside if you want to be outside the car, or if you want to stay inside lock using the door locks, if I'm correctly reading the manual section you posted.
