Radiator Cover Clips

Popped the radiator cover off today to install a grill badge. Cover came off ok, but when I reinstalled the cover, none of the 13 plastic clips that hold that cover in place are grabbing, the cover is loose and the clips just pop right out. I was installing by pulling the center out, pushing the clip in, then popping the center pin back in place. The pin clicks in place, but just not grabbing. Are these clips single use only?

No. To remove the cover you press the center in till it clicks. Pull them pin out. To put it back on you pull the center up above the pin. Put them pin in and press the center until it’s flush with the pin

Yep, did those steps, they still won't grab when I pop them back in. Even if I pop them in, without the cover in place, they they pull right back out.

I replaced my clips with some from Car Quest or someplace like that. The old clips did not work right for me either. The new clip have slots so that a clip removal tool can be used to reuse them over and over with easy removal.
I do not remember what size I used but if I recall I had to ream the holes out slightly for the new clips.

This has happened on a couple of the fasteners when I reinstalled them, but it was because I accidentally pushed the center pin of the fasteners down when I reinstalled causing them to release.

I prefer these clips but the aren’t “push to release”, you need a flat blade or the supplied tool. They’re a little wider than stock.

The Toyota Part Number for the upper radiator clip is 90467-07201.
Iirc there are 12 of them.
These work to replace the Toyota clips.

Amazon.com

Or you can buy OEM for $2.27 list.
Clip | Part #9046707201 | Toyota Auto Parts

This is what the Amazon ones look like in use. They’ve got a bigger head and hold more firmly.

Had also annoyed me about the loose pins on the radiator cover.
Thanks to the detailed instructions I have learned about this push-to-release-pins. I had simply pushed them in too far at first. Push them "flat" an now the original clips hold correctly again.
