Dealer rip off?
alright guys quick question on Friday my parents took their 2017 4Runner in for a brake pad job and an oil change, long story short they ****ed up and ended up replacing the brake rotors as well, they ended up checking the work order and confirmed it was in fact just the front and rear pads that were supposed to be replaced so they took the new rotors off and put the old ones on again and did just pads as they were supposed to but here's the kicker it still costed over $600 Canadian dollars to do even though the service manager said it was only going to cost $200 so we are thinking the dealer ripped them off. what do you guys think?

I wouldn’t pay that. Tell them to put all old stuff back on and have someone else do it for you, or do it yourself

What’s the price breakdown on the service order. Maybe they forgot to take the rotors off or charged you for the labor to fix their mistake.

well that's the thing I looked over the paper work and they never charged us for the labor to remove the new rotors and to put back on the old ones I inspected their brakes and they are old rotors but the pads are new, I'm going to look over the work order again right now

Looks like he quoted labor rate for the work, could he have added "parts extra"? Whatever he said/didn't say the numbers pencil out. Should have left the new rotors on, or was that going to make the bill more? Here in CA, I always factor 100/hr labor while I decide what I'm going to do myself and what I'll pay for.

well what my parents told me is that the bill was over $1000 with the rotors so they took the rotors off and out the old ones back on and kept the new pads, the shop manager also said the pads and labor would only be around $200, we just cant believe its that much for something as simple as pads even for a dealer, I told them next time to just bring it to me and I'd do it for them.

This is another case of why we don't go to a dealer unless we are incapable of doing the work ourselves. Once you get in there they are usually going to find something wrong, like my leaking radiator that has been going strong for 4 years plus since that diagnosis ( I was there for a recall.)

I bought my 4r over the phone, then picked it up when it came in. I hadn't been in a Toyota dealer in 30 years, but when I saw the faces on the waiting room full of customers getting their "free" oil changes, then hearing as they were whisked away to the service desk about what they found during the service, I was absolutely certain I'd never be sitting in that waiting room, ever. I've only been back to get fuel pump recall done, which worked out well as I got time/mileage recorded for the extended warranty I purchased on the other side of the country.

So, did I understand you, someone quoted 200 for 4 sets of pads installed and an oil change?
No way they would do it for that price.
Sounds like someone misquoted you, plain and simple.
The invoices look correct.

I feel like plenty of feedback has been given in response to the dealer experience, I wanted to chime in with something that helped me. This may prevent unnecessary visits to the dealer in the first place.
If any doubt exists as a result of the nature of to whether a tech is telling the truth, I purchased a $30 WiFi endoscope off of Amazon with a light at the end. Helps me see remaining pad thickness without removing wheel, up under the car, engine bay, etc.
Another $35 will get you a good-enough digital micrometer for checking rotor thickness. Caliper won’t work as it will always hit the high edge before the pad contact area.

this is not an unreasonable amount for 4 rotors and brake pads. perhaps the rotors were worn and needed to be replaced anyway. that's around what I've paid for brakes and rotors

Most dealers will not do a brake job without replacing the rotors. This is generally called a "pad slap job." The reason they don't like to do it is that there's no guarantee that the worn rotors are going to properly bed with the new pads. If that doesn't happen, you get an unhappy customer and they like to avoid that.

If they said it would be $200 it should be ~$200 (sounds like pads only). $600 even in Canadian is a little high for a pad job (no rotors) with labor at a dealer.
Problem now is they paid and probably signed off on the work. So it's just a lesson for next time.

i have a brake pad install scheduled this week at $280 OTD for both axles, thought it was reasonable quote from the dealer. Local shop quoted double that and would come down some. 4runner has about about 53k miles and if I were to change the pads thats all I would do this time. Come around 90k or so Id change rotors and pads.
