At 7K feet, that 392 Rubicon is going to be down on power by about 15%. If it were me, I'd just be manually shifting the 4runner and keeping it at higher rpms on the grades and accept the fact that strong acceleration in that particular situation will not be it's strong suit.

If power is really bothering you, I wouldn't bother with a naturally aspirated engine or even a supercharged one. Turbos are where it's at. A turbo will increase boost to compensate for the thin air and try to obtain the commanded torque from the ECU. Turbos still suffer from a loss of power at altitude and lag increases, but they don't suffer remotely as bad an NA or SC'd motor. More like 3% reduction in power for every 5K feet vs ~10% every 5K feet for an NA/SC'd motor.

Even if the 392 was down 15% is still has 408 horsepower (480 normally) at least on my sons crate engine.

This. I drive up the passes here in Washington on a regular basis and I always put the shifter in 4th. Really reduces the gear hunting.

The roads must not be as steep as the interstate 17 to flagstaff AZ. I put the shifter in 4th but it has to go to 3rd to keep any speed. The speed limit is 70 or 75 and a lot of people are going 80. The 4runner does not have a chance. You just try to stay out of the way.

This x 1000

I don’t think keeping it in 4th is going to accomplish much.

Going from the valley in Phoenix to 7000 feet puts a lot of strain on this engine when trying to keep up and pass other vehicles when climbing at that altitude.

Regarding the turbos, the lag is really exaggerated here at altitude.
I think a powerful NA engine solves that problem, even when accounting for a loss of power at altitude.
And the difference between the 5.7 and 6.4L V8’s is substantial.

I haven’t. I need to look them up. I was under the impression that magnusson was the best (only?) way to go.
I’m definitely open to the idea if they make a reliable SC, but I seem to only read about magnusson stories

The passes here in Washington are lower grades and lower altitude…especially over Snoqualmie pass.

I'm wondering if filling up with premium in Phoenix when the tank is near empty would help with the return trip. You'll have to spend some time driving in Phoenix for the ECU to "learn" the octane rating.

I live in Phoenix and have made numerous trips to/from Flagstaff on Thursdays and Mondays since 2011. I maintain 70-75 on the steepest grades and 80-85 elsewhere. When downshifting occurs, it's only one gear down with no hunting. I have stock Michelin tires at 35 psi and 0.75 inch front lift. Current engine oil is 5W-30 (it was 0W-20 during the warranty).

I use OBDLink MX+ for monitoring various parameters. The highest ATF temperature on the steepest grade is 208 (pan?) and 224 (torque converter?) with Valvoline MaxLife fluid. ATF temps usually range from 175 to 185 on the trip up.

Perhaps check for a dent in the lowest point of your crossover exhaust pipe?

I wish they would update their site. Tuning is not yet available for 2020+. Physically, yea, the kit would probably fit, but you won't be able to tune.

That’s what I figured. I saw that they grouped in 2020 with 2010-2019 and that led me to believe they simply were too lazy to update this the way magnusson had.

I read on the forum where someone communicated with magnusson in July of 2020, at which time the company told him that it wouldn’t be long before they released a SC for 2020 4runners.
It’s now been over 13 months, so I’m not holding my breath.
