What to do without being to install a supercharger ??

I’m at a bit of a crossroads ….. I love my AG trd pro…….. at sea level. This October will be 2 years of ownership and I’ve put almost 19k miles on it.

The issue is that since moving to nearly 7k feet above sea level and going down to Phoenix often on weekends, the drive back up to the mountains just sucks.
Between the gear hunting and just absolute lack of power in passing others on 2 lane roads while climbing, along with that awful drone of the stock exhaust, I’m not sure what else to do.

I had grand plans to put in the magnusson SC and swap out the exhaust and do a 1” lift, which I thought would have been perfect — until I realized there is still no magnusson SC.
I’m starting to think there won’t be one coming out any time soon — presumably because of the challenges developing one that can integrate with the new safety features ??

Any suggestions on what to do to augment power? The pedal commander and sprint booster simply improve throttle response, correct? I’m not sure how valuable that alone will be.

I don’t want to get rid of this vehicle but I’m looking hard at the wrangler rubicon 392 to have a big V8 with tons of torque.
Not to mention it will be more fun ….

Are you going to Flagstaff on Interstate 17? That road is a challenge in a 4runner. Steep grades and altitude make it really struggle. I find it best just to slow down instead of trying to go 70 mph in 3rd gear at 5k rpm for long distances. Yes it is embarrassing when the semi trucks pass you but that is just how these 4runners are in steep grades at high altitudes. That being said unless you have a higher power lighter car or a diesel pickup they all have to work hard inn the mountains.

Yup — I17 to flag.
And up through globe or payson when I come back to Pinetop-lakeside.

It’s getting really old fast.
I am not sure how the rubicon 392 will do but I know it will be much better with the 6.4L engine.
I test drove the eco diesel Chrysler fiatt developed and is now in the wrangler. I wasn’t very impressed tbh.
Plus, it’s developed in part by fiatt so I don’t trust it

I go on the trails in Western Colorado every year, up to 13,000 feet elevation, and I have had no problem with power. Granted, all the highways are two lane with low speed limits so there is no need to do 70 MPH. The worst is highway 62 over Dallas Divide -- fairly steep with a 60 MPH speed limit. I just take my time as others have suggested.

I have had two Wranglers in the past, and the 4Runner is so much nicer than they were. I would never have one again. Fiat isn't all that bad: my first Wrangler was during the Renault period and the French electronics were terrible! The second was during the Daimler (Mercedes) period and not so bad, but still not up to the 4Runner in comfort and off road capability.

take it out of drive, keep it in 4th. itll do better. make it shift to third if needed. we do the drive up to the rim monthly, and yes its slower by about 30 minutes vs my f250 with the 6.7, but its not terrible. this is with heavy 33's on the toyota btw. the tune from vivid racing did help a bit.

As much as I don't like my powerstroke F250 - I do have to admit that it's really nice on the highway at elevation when you come to a big long grade like I17 and the cruise control is on and it never downshifts - you just see the boost gauge climb up and hear a little turbo whine and it just cruises up the mountain. (Until it blows out some $$$ part out of one of the dozen or so poorly engineered Rube Goldberg systems and leaves you stranded...) Same experience in a few turbo gasoline vehicles I've owned. A lot of people don't like the idea of a turbo 4 in a 4Runner, but I'd love to have one living at altitude. I think it would improve highway cruising. I daydream of an LC300 being in my driveway.

I don't have any suggestions for you other than re-gearing, and I didn't like 4.56 gears for highway use - I thought they were too low geared. None of the performance mods to passively get more air in or out will probably help. The thin air already flows pretty freely through the existing intake and exhaust. It's just not enough engine to make that climb effortlessly. I think the 6.4 Hemi will barely know the hill is there. I put a few thousand miles on a Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi last summer round trip from Utah to the Canadian border and back over a bunch of mountain passes. It was very impressive. Power felt unlimited. Even towing a big camper for part of the trip I could pull any pass we came to as fast as I was willing to go. The 8AT is great too. I'm sure the JL with the 6.4 would have no trouble with the climb. There were plenty of things I didn't like about that truck. But the engine/trans performance was great.

The new Ford Bronco with the 2.7L ecoboost probably suits you better.

That’s a really engine —Except that it’s a 2 year wait for a vehicle that is having major roof issues right now.
My thought was maybe go to the wrangler now (since my off roading has picked up since moving here) and then come back to Toyota in 2024/2025 once the 6th Gen is a few years old

You pretty much nailed it.

With the new JL, I was pleasantly surprised how composed the ride was (I drove the eco diesel) at 75mph.
The wind noise is the huge thing to get used to coming from the 4Runner.
But I figure the sound of the exhaust on the 6.4 hemi might make up for that : )

This seems like a no brainer to me. If you can afford the wrangler rubicon 392, do it.

Does it have the legendary reliability of the 4runner, no. Is it brand new and under warranty and are Wrangler's generally reliable relative to everything else? Yes!

Just as good, arguably better Off Road. Not as good on road stability, but you'll be too busy passing everyone to worry about that.

Lastly, while no one can say for sure, the rubicon 392 likely won't last long and due the relative 'rarity' and strong desirability on a model that already has low depreciation it should retain its value better than a 4runner.

Pics when you get the 392!

That funny you mention the 392 Wrangler. My son has a 2014 4door Wrangler with the 392 AEV conversion. It has 38" tires and very heavy armor, winch etc. It had 4:56 gears in the heavily modified Dana 44 axles.
That thing is a beast on acceleration. Last Thanksgiving when we were visiting my wife and I were driving the Jeep. I was going about 20 mph on the pavement in 2wd and nailed it. When it kicked down to 1st gear it broke the ring and pinion. He has since spent 20k upgrading to a shaved 14 bolt rear and Dana 60 front axle everything aftermarket premium parts with 4:88 gears. If you do not mind poor gas mileage those things are a blast. I would buy a new 392 Wrangler in a heartbeat if I was in the market. Those thing accelerated like crazy and would not even notice the grades on I 17. You would be smiling every time you pass a 4runner struggling to get up the hill.

Coming from having a 4 cylinder Subaru, I'm pretty excited to take my 4R up to Flag for the first time. If you thought the V6 struggles.... That subaru i4....

Lol Thanks. I don’t want to get blasted for posting pics of the 392 on this forum but what the hell ……
If I end up getting it, I will post them.

I honestly would my 4Runner if I could get the SC for it.
But then again— as you said — these V8 beasts may have a very short life span. It would be fun to own one until it’s no longer possible to do so.

Never too late to consider a 200 series LC... with a 5.7 v8 and the 8-speed should be able to do it with ease

Some inspiration from VooDoo's build in ih8mud:

Nothing shrugs off the effects of high altitude like forced induction.

I passed on a job opportunity in Colorado partly because I knew that I wouldn't enjoy driving at such high altitudes. Though I admit my decision may have been overly influenced by the existential-crises my rental car experienced while navigating between Denver, Redstone and Aspen. It was so bad at one point, I started chanting the mantra of The Little Engine That Could, "I think I can. I think I can..."

However, I tackle grades similar to that on my daily commute. No problem at all. The difference is I'm now climbing to less than 1,200 feet, as opposed to an order of magnitude higher.
