My shocks are leaking. Need some advice

Hi everyone,

My front shocks are leaking. I have a 2016 limited with Xreas. Should I replace all four with bilstein 5100? do I need the springs too? Can I get a link to purchase a set? A mechanic told me I can just replace a leaking one with 48510-80499 from Toyota! I have heard that if one leaks, all four has to be replaced. Need clarification on this

Thank you

Good mechanic just replace the one that is leaking with oem if you like the ride. If you want to upgrade or lift then it's a matzo ball. you can get a set of 5100 pretty cheap from a bunch of vendors on line.

Bilstein 5100 Complete Set | 5th Gen 4Runner | FJ.

edit if you have the rear sag then get new rear springs. if you have the nose dive when braking get new fronts.

My limited understanding of x-reas is that shocks must be replaced with their diagonally connected pair.

As such I would recommend removing all four and replace them with whatever you like.

I’m looking at trading my 17 Offroad for a 22 limited. The first thing I’m going to do is change the shocks, wheels and tires. I wish xreas was an option like kdss that you don’t have to get.

I thought once one shock goes in the system, all system has to be replaced? no?

If it was due to milage or age depending on use only then I would assume that. If you hit a pot hole or bump hard with one tire and caused a leak in that one then shock just replace that one. For better piece of mind you can replace them in pairs e.g front two or rear two. I have blown one shock before and have replaced just that shock without any issues.

A quick video showing how they are linked together (front left to rear right is separate from front right to rear left).

or the care care nuts more detailed overview "you have to replace one diagonal" if one piece of that diagonal is bad, which is front corner, rear opposite corner, center shock, and the lines to/from those pieces:

You can replace a single XREAS shock one time. The P.O. of my limited has a single XREAS shock replacement early in the service record. The idea is the XREAS system can be opened one time, if done properly. If you replace one shock fine or replace all four. Either way, you get one shot at opening the XREAS hydraulics. AFter that the "valves" on the frame need to replaced as well. That is when people see the $4000 estimate for replacement. The question is..do just one now and hope for no more leaks...

I'm looking at Dobinson twin tubes as a replacement for my XREAS. I think they will be durable. Until XREAS leaks however, I like it, and hope to get many more miles before a leak, Im at 80,000 miles now.
