Trading tires?

My 17 ORP should arrive at my dealer early next week. I would like to replace the stock tires with KO2's but what's the best way to deal with the original tires so I'm not paying for two sets of brand new tires? Do I try to work a deal with a local tire shop for a trade or swap or do I sell them on Craigslist?

Thanks,

JDG

See if dealer has the tires you want and add a "trade in" as part of the sale. I would avoid Craigslist except as last resort. There is also a section here for sales but obviously someone would have to be nearby

Why not just start with the easiest solution and ask the dealer? See if they will give you money for trade for your 2 mile tires.

I sold mine to Discount Tire with right around 5k miles for a few hundred.

CL is your best option if you have the space for them. Most people here are trying to get rid of the stock tires.

Be sure to post the tire size, tread depth, fitment for other vehicles and plenty of pics. Also check around CL for your area to price them out.

When we bought our SR5 last year, I asked the dealer. They gave me $600 for tires/wheels. Not the greatest, but not the worst either. We had no use so the new tires and rims only cost me $800. A win win the way I look at it!

I just did the same thing, they sold quickly on Craigslist for $750 to a FJ owner.

my dealer traded straight up when I asked. so when I picked up my 4r, it had BFG kO2s on it.

They told me that they can always use the stock tires on their used car fleet.

It doesn't hurt to ask.

If your dealer decides to not buy the tires, try Discount Tire. I just replaced my stock Bridgestone duelers which had 14K miles and they gave me $320 for them. I felt like this was pretty generous. You'd obviously do a lot better with brand new tires. Also, DT will match or beat any price quote for the tires you want to put on.

Sell them locally if you can. You may sit on them for a but but the tire size is pretty common with many trucks or SUV's. You'll get more money that way.

Most tire shops I've been to always offer something for the used rubber. I doubt you will get fair value for them that way though. Craigslist will probably get you more $$ for them, but they hassle of actually selling them is painful for some.

The only way to really get the full value for them is to put 60k miles on them first and then buy the KO2's.

I ended up selling mine locally on craigslist but didn't get much for them ($200 for 5 tires if memory serves). I just needed them out of the garage. I'd hoped to get $400 but I would likely have had to wait quite some time for that - mine sold in a month.

Local tire shops were offering only $15-$30 a tire.

It also depends on your geography. My local craigslist has tons of stock 4runner tires and wheels from people doing lifts, so that depresses the value compared to a place where more people are running them stock (or where fewer 4runners sell).

Sold my take offs with about 5K miles for $550 on Craigslist here in the Phoenix metro. Lots of 4Runners here and a lot of people with take offs (big market for lifts and after market stuff with all of the off-roading available close by), so it was pretty flooded with people asking between $600 and $800, thus why I decided to go a bit cheaper to just move them quickly...
