What's this called?

Hi guys,

What's this called? Close to the drain oil plug.
Looks it's leaking, but not sure what it is.
This is a Limited 2017 model.
There is a label with N93 and a serial number, but I cannot find anything about the part.

Thanks.What's this called?-20210907_210534-jpgWhat's this called?-20210907_210524-jpgWhat's this called?-20210907_210417-jpgWhat's this called?-20210907_210517-jpg

It's the front differential. But unless my eyes are failing, I don't see any signs of leakage.

That’s definitely not leaking.

Looks like something could have been leaking and rubbed down on the backside from this photo.

I've clean it up. For sure was oil and not coming from above. I've checked after 2 more weeks and it's a little bit of oil again.
My wife drives the car, only to work and back.

If is the gasket, it's not covered by warranty, right? Looks it's coming from that gasket.

Thanks guys.

Nope not covered. Looks brand new and now it has to be cracked open and repaired. Pretty sad if you ask me that auto makers can’t seal their parts correctly. We are literally about to send people to freakin’ Mars and we can’t seal a transfer case.

Yes, very sad, not even 40K miles.
Not sure where they get those gaskets, similar problem last year with my 2014 Trail.
On that was the gasket for the transfer case...$1000 for repair

Thanks again guys.

seriously 4 years and it looks spanking new, good on ya OP's Wife

of course... your wife may have been driving through deep puddles with a hot differential... that would cause a gasket failure, especially if the breather is clogged.

If it is such a small amount of oil as you seem to indicate, it is nothing to worry about and certainly not in need of repair.

Is it leaving spots in the garage or driveway?

Not leaving spots on driveway, but was oil on the cover. I've clean that also, so far only a little bit around that gasket, not enough to leave spots on driveway.

Thanks.

I still haven't figured out where the oil your seeing is. Is it wicking down on the gasket? It looks like there's some residue on the housing near the top - if that's the issue, there is a vent tube that attaches to a copper vent nipple on the top of the diff housing. They are not sealed housings, and they have air exchange out of that vent as the diff heats and cools, that also has the function of allowing any moisture to evaporate out. If the diff breather tube comes off, it'll spit out some gear oil when the diff spins and slings the oil around. It may be possible that there's an incomplete seal on that diff breather tube. (I have had my diff breather tube come off - but I've had my front diff out maybe 5 times between re gearing and ARB lockers that had a bunch of problems and had to be replaced twice - it's unusual for an OEM diff that's never been removed to leak.)

You can tell what kind of oil it is by smelling it. Gear oil smells different from engine oil or power steering fluid that might drip from above.

The picture I've attached is what that front differential looks like from the top. The red arrows point to where the breather tube is. The segment between the two red arrows is a rubber hose that is purely a friction fit - there are no hose clamps on it. It just pushes into place. It should not be pressurized, so it should still seal up there, but that's where I think a leak is most likely if you had a plugged breather tube somewhere else. If pressure built up - it should push past the friction fit hose at one of those two red arrows. It typically should not blow out through the gasket seal.

FWIW - I'd probably just let it go and have the dealer check the diff fluid whenever you get the oil changed to make sure it's not leaking anymore.
