i am not running toyos but this issue of vibration is real, and it sucks big time
so do your research and make sure you tell the store where your having them put on and balance your concerns before you do it Good luck
if it was me, I would only buy and install from the same store

Right now it looks like I’ll be doing it all at my local Toyota dealership. They have a good deal on the tires I want and they have a Hunter road force balancer.

I’m starting to wonder if I have a hardware issue. I took the car to Discount for a 4th balance effort and it’s literally the same thing. They said it was shown as fine until they put it in “technical mode” and it found one was off 2 oz. supposedly fixed. Nope.

I’m about to move across the country and will just give this car to my wife. She doesn’t mind a horrible ride or an interior that sounds like an ‘83 Escort so she can have it. I’m going back to a sports car.

For folks who are new - this issue has been around since the 5th gen - really in some sense since the 3rd gen. There are a billion threads about this and how different people have resolved it. Toyota calls the condition "steering wheel flutter". The solution for the Lexus GX models was a firmer preload spring in the steering rack control valve that increases the rack's internal resistance to feedback - (think of it like adding a firmer steering dampener). it also applied to the Fj Cruiser and maybe the 4Runner for some years.

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...31942-9999.pdf

If you can do this in 4hrs - I'm impressed!

"Some vehicles may exhibit a steering flutter condition while driven at approximately 55 – 70 mph. In some cases, this concern is caused by a wheel imbalance or RFV (Radial Force Variation) that is out of range. If the tire and wheel assembly is satisfactory, a steering control valve preload spring is available to reduce the steering flutter felt through the steering wheel."

If this should be done and Toyota does nothing but wait for pissed off customers, they’re freakin’ idiots. This is my first Toyota at car #24, and I have to say the more I learn the more disgruntled I become. If there’s an issue address it.

This is an issue Toyota should have fixed a long time ago. Toyota also should have upgraded the 4R powertrain and given us at least an 8AT by now. Or at least let the transmission shift to all 6 gears in the transmission we have... (it's a 6 speed transmission that only uses 5 of the gears and has been that way since 2003). Don't hold your breath for updates. Toyota gives zero f's about the 4R.

In fairness - it's rarely an issue with OEM tires and OEM tire pressure. No one would buy it if it happened on the test drive. It's not usually a problem until you also combine it with poorly balanced tires.

And - what else are you going to buy that can comfortably cruise for 700 miles of highway (if you don't have steering flutter, lol), run through the rubicon, and then go compete in the Baja 1000? It's not for everyone. But for the people who use it like it's built for, there's not much else out there that can do the same things. A lot of buyers probably should have bought a Highlander. But - that's still no excuse for not fixing this issue.

Throw on some new UCA’s and actually get some positive caster. Has the shake subsided for those who have done this?

My tires are OEM. I’m taking it in and telling the dealer to stop the vibrating at whatever cost or it’s getting escalated to Toyota and run into the ground until everyone hates me. F ‘em.

Its so easy and rewarding to cause a scene at the dealership. I'm not that type of person at all. I could never do that at a respected local shop. Zero Fs given toward the dealership who sold me the truck and their outrageous charges for everything.

I've never gotten to the point of "calling toyota" corporate office. How would one go about this? Is there a certain phone number I can call? Help a brother out. I'm anticipating I will be needing this in the very near future.

Also, while I have everyones attention...

I'm kicking around the idea of trading my stock 2021 Trail rims with stock Dueller tires (10,000miles on em) in for a set of new TRD rims and have them put the new Toyo ATIII tires on those right away. All at the same visit. Is this even something they would consider? What can I expect to pay out of pocket for the upgraded TRD rims? What can I expect to get back for my 2021 Trail rims and Dueller tires?

Thanks!

That's a question for your dealer. Otherwise, you can probably get $600 for your stock wheels and tires. The normal silver Off Road wheels go for $400 all day, so your black ones may go for a bit more. Unfortunately, the factory Bridgestones don't add too much.

You can get factory TRD wheels from BAM Wholesale Parts for about $750 shipped to you. See if youre dealer will price match them.

No need to sweat about anything until that small chance of something going wrong happens. High chance you'll be fine. Go get your tires mounted, Road Force Balanced like you want, and enjoy your 4R.

Road Force balancing is not needed with new tire(s) install. It is used to diagnose issues with wheel/tire combo.

I’m not talking about being rude. I’m talking about being there and using proper channels to create so much pressure that they end up fixing it or hating me.

First you have to document a problem with the dealer. If it doesn’t get fixed, you call the manufacturer and start a case, for which they’ll give you a case number.

It goes multiple ways from there. If it’s Ford, they will try to wear you out so you go away with lies, accusations, and even scheduled dealer visits just to wear you out, and they do not care if you ever buy another Ford. Some others I’m sure are better.

I’m taking mine in Thursday to the dealer and driving the 10 minutes at 65 mph as the steering TSB recommends and let them try to figure it out.

this issue is more noticeable when you upgrade to AT or MT tires the HT tires don't have this issue usually I didn't have any luck with Falken AT3 so the search goes on for me

The OEM HT tires are the ones I’m having trouble with. Discount Tire has run tests 3 times and say the tires and rims are fine.
