HELP: Stock Spare Location with Aftermarket Wheel

Hi All,

Yes I've searched but it's a hard search to find what I'm looking for. I have no desire to do bumper mount, hitch mount, roof rack mount of the spare, nor do I wish it to perpetually take up my interior cargo space as it is at the moment.

Looking to see if anyone else has any other ideas on this.

Just got new wheels and tires put on this week and the "dongle/plate" of the stock spare tire carrier assembly won't fit through the center hole of the new wheel. FML.

My only idea so far is to cut one of the links and install a master link/quick link like below so that I can feed the carrier from below the wheel and then reattach it to the chain using the master link. PITA for sure but doable.

3/16 in. Quick Links, 3 Pc.

Anyone else encountered this and come up with another solution or has an idea that fits within my parameters?

Gratuitous wheel shot.

TIA

Are those 22’s? Either way they look sweet! I don’t even know what the carrier looks like (never taken it down) but I’ll do some investigating.

20's. Thanks!

Heres a pic of it stolen from ebay.

The piece with the spring sticking out the bottom is what slides through the center hole.

The problem is that it also has a solid stem on it so even turning it sideways, it doesnt fit. I suspect removing the spring assembly would not be good. And trimming the sides of the bar down would obviously make it useless.

Did someone leave their socket on the pulley?

what did you do with the stock spare? maybe just garage the 5th wheel and put the stock one back under.

get a flat > change to stock spare > change to 5th when you get home while repair/replacing the flat tire

HELP: Stock Spare Location with Aftermarket Wheel

CUT A LINK AND PUT A CARABINER HELP: Stock Spare Location with Aftermarket Wheel

But seriously would it be worth it to stow the new spare inside the cargo hold and use your spare well for an expanded fuel tank?

this isn't too difficult to solve. Here are your options:

1. sell the rims
2 put back your spare under there.
3. buy AAA

stock spare is currently in the backyard. the difference in diameter of the 2 setups is not large so that is doable to put the stock spare under there. although not ideal since I spent almost 500 on that extra wheel and tire.

no, that's where the jack bar fits in to crank it down.

so that's my current leading idea. cut a link and use a quick link.

It may be worth it for some but not for me, I don't really need the expanded fuel tank and the loss of cargo space would quickly become annoying on camping trips, road trips, picking up local used stuff.

That's what I'm doing, nice and simple.

I'm a little confused, if the center bore of the wheels for these trucks is hub centric meaning they fit snugly over the hub, how would your aftermarket's have a smaller bore and still fit over the hub?

I know when I put my KMC under the rear, it was slightly challenging to get the plate through the hole, and I had to do a C shape route where you get one of those tabs that sticks off it in first at an angle then straight down then curve it the opposite angle.

hmm...great question. I'll go give it another shot with the "C" route. I only tried once and it was right as the shop was closing because i had to go back at the last minute because they forgot to give me my fifth wheel.

however it was obvious that the diameter of the hole on the new wheel was less than the yellow spare. maybe the back opening was wider and then the front closes down? will have to look into it further.
