Wow, I did not know this. Just another reason I'll never live in NJ.

Wish we could!

Fortunately/unfortunately the standard deduction for married couples filing jointly is $24,000 so I’d have to come up with $23,000 in other deductions to be able to claim it.

With mortgage rates dropping, less of your payment is going to interest, which gives you buying power, great, but less of your payment is deductible.

Now what was that about spending $1000 to save $500…

We can’t win for losing Save Yourself Some Money When Buying Your Big Tires

Not a deduction.

You have to declare goods that you purchased from out of state, where you didn't pay taxes, and then pay the taxes in New Jersey. Its like that in most states I would imagine but I bet a lot of people just "forget" to do it.

Same for me.

No reason other than my choice of industry (telco) doesn’t pay much differently in cost of living adjustments for HCOL areas than it does LCOL areas.

What would be a plum job (akin to railroad, city, etc.) in the southeast US wouldn’t hold a candle to prices influenced by higher NYC metro salaries.

For not just one, but several telephone companies, there are concentrations of director and VP level talent in both NJ and TX, specifically.

Yea, Verizon/AT&T are huge here. AT&T a lot moved to Texas, however.

And really, nobody in NJ is reporting a DE tire purchase. Don't read this, Murphy. I give you enough.

Another tip regarding Tire Rack:

If you sign up for the loyalty programs at FreeShipping.com, you get an additional 10% off. I think the program costs something like $12 p/month and covers a whole raft of big retailers. Cancel anytime.

Nifty thing if you are planning big ticket purchases like appliances, etc. IIRC this saved me another $70 on a set of Michelin Defenders last year.

ymmv

Once your tires are mounted and balanced at a shop, how much are you saving going with Tire Rack?

Basically nothing. Much more of a hassle if you get a bad tire too. I really don't get buying for them considering their prices are the same as any number of my local places.

Amazon is cheaper and can send the tires right to an installer. Another 5% cheaper if you have the Amazon Prime Visa.
