I’ve been working on a cargo box with 2 drawers for the last few months. I wanted to keep it as low profile as possible, but still have a 4” drawer height. I used 1/8” thick aluminum for the top, and 1/16” thick aluminum for the bottom, and the drawer bottoms, in order to minimize height. The total box height is only 4.3” tall. I used 3/4” thick pine boards for the sides, back, and drawers front/back/sides.

Unfortunately I forgot to take pics of the box before covering it in carpeting.

I wanted to have many tie-down points for fridge, dog crates, and miscellaneous cargo. So I added aluminum strips along both sides, and down the center. The strips have several threaded holes for adding eye bolts as needed.

With the drawers:

Decided to cover the front of the drawers with carpet to match the box:

The rear of the box has aluminum hooks to catch under the OEM loops behind the rear seats. This makes installing/removing the box really quick and easy.

Installed with the rear seats up:

This is how the rear hooks work. You can also see there is an aluminum strip along the back to fasten a sleeping extension to.

The sleeping extension is made from 3/4" plywood. With the extension attached:

Installed with the rear seats down, and the extension attached:

I made some steel brackets that attach the front edge of the extension to the OEM seat bolt holes. A view from the front seats:

The extension has strategically placed threaded inserts for fridge and/or dog crates. More pics to come.

A few more pics of the cargo box and sleeping platform showing the modularity I've designed into it.
Fridge mounted to sleeping extension:

Fridge and dog crate on cargo box:

Two dog crates on cargo box:

Fridge with sleeping pad:

I can also mount the dog crates toward the front, on the extension, but didn't get pics of that. Basically, I can mount any combination of items in any position/orientation for whatever the situation warrants.

I can't believe that the rear cargo area doesn't have any dome lights. The lights on the rear hatch don't light up the cargo area very well at all. (And that's after I upgraded the bulbs in them.) So I decided to add a pair of KC cyclone lights in the upper corners.

The lights are so bright that I also decided to add a dimmer to them, so I can adjust the brightness level. Light, Dimmer, and On/Off switch on driver side:

Light on passenger side:

In this pic, you can also see an auxiliary 12V outlet that I added. I figured as long as I was running wires behind that panel, I might as well add that also. This outlet is always hot.

Really nice work Bandit Runner. You got some mad fabricating skills and equipment. Being in manufacturing myself real recognizes real.

So I wanted to put something in the open spot next to the USB port in the center dash. I like having always hot 12V sockets, so I decided to put 2 in there. First I ran wiring from my auxiliary fuse block into the back of the opening. I drilled a 1/2" hole in the back of the opening to run the wires through.

Then I designed a 2-socket holder that fit into the opening. I 3D printed it.

Test fit the 12V sockets:

Test fit everything into the opening:

Sanded smooth and painted low gloss black:

Used 3M double-sided automotive trim tape to hold it in place. Final install:

Very very nice set up. Two questions. Where did you get the front aluminum hooks that slip into the tie downs and where did you get the black drawer handles?

Thanks

Thanks. I fabricated the aluminum hooks, and the handles are from Amazon.

Thank you. Very much appreciated. You know you could make a nice little side business making kits, just saying. 😀

Man, awesome work on that cargo box! Wish I had that skill.

Its been a busy last couple of weeks. First, I took one last camping trip before winter sets in:

After that I set out to prep the truck for winter. First I spent a Saturday coating the undercarriage with WoolWax.
Then I cleaned it all up and put a coat of wax on it.

Started a new project this weekend. I wanted to to do something different for the upper and lower grille areas.

No turning back now. I started cutting out all the diamond shapes.

I'm going to put a black mesh screen in the upper and lower grille. I bought this 1/4" hexagon mesh online.

Still figuring out how to attach it. I plan on putting a pair of DD SS5 and a pair of DDSS3 behind the mesh in the lower grille.
More to come.
