limited 4LO

Hi Guys:

I have a limited All wheel drive.

today it was raining and I wanted to put it in 4HI and 4LO to test it.

I put it in 4HI and it was good.
stopped the truck, put in Neutral and put 4LO and then I put it in drive right away (I think I was suppose to wait for the lights to stop flashing) and I heard like a grinding sound and then I put it in Neutral right away.

The 4LO light stopped flashing and I was able to put it back in drive again.

I tested all configuration and they seem to be fine.

Could have I damaged something like transfer case teeth or tranny by doing this??

Thanks

You have to wait till all the lights stop flashing to put it in gear. How many miles on the 4runner and when was the last time it was put into lo? You may not be exercising it enough. Mine made a grinding sound one time. That was when it was brand new and the first time it was ever put into lo. It has never done it again in almost 8 years. I do not think you damaged anything.

Same thing happened to me, got some grinding noises, and it was my first time ever going into 4Lo, it has roughly 400kms on it. Kinda scary to hear that, I hope that never happens again.

I vé had that grinding noise once or twice. It should be fine. You have to be stopped or rolling just barely in neutral. Make sure the wheels are straight, Put it neutral and put it in 4lo wait for the light to go solid then give it slight bit of gas.

Edit: Important correction to the original post Just checked mine. The truck has to be completely stopped for the 4lo to engage and disengage.

Just don't make a habit of it but I'm sure it's fine. I've done it once myself in my Ranger but never had issues after.

Correct.

I was fully stopped in neutral.
I think I just put it in drive before the lights stopped flashing.
Even the manual is not very clear that if you should not put it in drive before the lights stop flashing.

One thing I don't understand. For the limited trim as it is all wheel drive all the time. Does the 4Lo and 4Hi change the power ration from rear to front? What is the ratio for each settings if anyone knows?

L4L= Low 4wd with Locked Center Diff =fixed 50/50 front/rear distribution
H4L= High 4wd with Locked Center Diff = fixed 50/50 front/rear distribution
