2021 ORP Brakes Hard

Does anyone have brakes that really grab under slight foot pedal pressure. Mine seem to grab fast and hard with very little pressure. I noticed it after I had my battery disconnected for a while installing a remote start. Did I miss doing something correct when reconnecting the battery?

4Runner’s brakes are (and should be) very soft compared to my previous vehicle - 2020 Range Rover Evoque. Those were so grabby it made me appear to be a bad driver. No way to feather them because they’d change intensity despite steady light pressure coasting to a stop.

Is the issue ^^ this bad that your passengers get annoyed or can it be overcome with driving style? My issue could not. Also, are you getting any warning lights when braking? ABS, unless an actual error, is usually momentary and gone by the time you release the brake.

Its to the point where I have to think about how to brake when braking. No error codes or lights. I'm beginning to think I have a bad brake booster or actuator.

My 17' OR did this from brand new. I replaced the rotors with Raybestos slotted units and Akebono ceramic pads. This stopped all the issues, including the common creeping issue at stoplights. The brakes also felt at a minimum 25% stronger in braking power.

I now have a 21' ORP and have yet to have any of the prior issues. I was ready to order all of the above parts right from the start but they have been fine, so I'm just waiting.

its normal, and the brake dive makes it even more dramatic.

FWIW - the easy way to tell if something is wrong is to go test drive another new one. I would not say mine has grabby brakes. Usually the opposite. Except under the "emergency" braking where the ECU identifies a very fast transition from gas to brake and then will apply IIRC 3 times the brake line pressure. It'll stop PDQ if it needs to. But it'll catch you by surprise when it does it the first time. It's possible you have some error in a sensor that's causing it to do this. Or that's it's normal and takes some getting used to. It's hard to describe things over the internet or for us to compare. Go test drive another one. If yours is different - have Toyota check it out. They should fix it if something is wrong. And it's not something you could do by disconnecting the battery.

Thanks for the explanation, makes that bizarre nose dive more understandable.

It shouldn't happen very often. Depends on driving, but I've had it happen maybe 3 times in 7 years. If it's happening a lot it's probably not right.

IIRC, there is a TSB about lifting the TSS equipped (2020 and up) models can possibly cause issues.

obxbird,
I have a new 2021 Venture and my brakes have a similar feel. Grabby at slower speeds and the modulation is poor. I hope that as I get more miles on it it that it will lessen. Definitely not what I expected.
I will try and drive a pals new 2021 ORP ( lots more miles than mine) and see how it brakes.

I have the same issue on my 21 ORP, much grabbier than my 2011 Forester was lol but I ascribe it to just a different beast and I am learning its quirks, it doesn't seem a safety issue.

When I got my 2018 i activated the abs and the grabby brakes all the time it seemed, and none of the times were emergency type situations, just slowing for a green to yellow light type of deal. I can't now remember the last time this happened and i'm sure its because i've learned the effort needed to brake under these same situations. I never changed any of the components. Give yourself some time with it.

Thanks to all!! I'll keep an eye on it and follow up with that TSB for lifted vehicles to see what it says.

I just got my 21 ORP and my brakes are not grabby at all. A lot of it has to do with you so like others say you should check out another truck to see how they are.

I had a similar experience several times in first 100 miles or so on my 2020 ORP. On the way back home from dealer, and first brake on freeway was a sudden hard stop. I did not feel anything unusual when I test drove it. I guess I learned how to use is over time without hard stop. Its been 15K miles now, and feels normal.
