Tailgate just got extremely heavy. Guessing supports? -Easy way to hold it open?

Hey Guys,

I have a 2013 4runner and my tailgate just got extremely heavy when trying to open and hard to keep it open. Guessing that both tailgate pneumatic hinge supports are the problem?

If my problem is with the tailgate supports, is there a good trick to keeping the tailgate open so you can easily change it out? Trying to avoid requiring another person for this and if you guys have any ideas for placing a block somewhere, ladder to hold it open, etc.

Thanks,

Dan

An adjustable painters extension pole would do the trick

Amazon.com: ZKTOOL 1063 New Lift Support Clamp, Spark Plug Caliper Two-in-one Function Tool, (12mm Spark plug gap tool) : Automotive

i have a couple of these left in the back for those cold days where no upgraded strut will stay up due to really cold temps. if im keeping it open for awhile i put both. but for just a quickie, i just use one clamp..

Amazon.com: ZKTOOL 1063 New Lift Support Clamp, Spark Plug Caliper Two-in-one Function Tool, (12mm Spark plug gap tool) : Automotive

best 10 bucks spent.

edit: just re-read your post. any average ladder will do place wood/whatever you can find to adjust height as needed.

Get those clamps. The dampers are already trashed so it doesn't matter if it damages the shaft.

I did this and it fixed everything. It will even open a hatch with a Gobi ladder and a shovel on it.

Off topic, my struts are getting squeaky. What does everyone recommend (grease or spray?)?

I read that description like three times, and it was super confusing. I kept picturing a coin style spark plug gap tool somehow holding the strut up. Glad I clicked to check it out. I must be really tired.

Never seen that before. Pretty cool. I wouldn't gap a plug with it, but perfect for the struts.

Vice grip on the piston always worked for me. I used to just keep a small one in the back of the Jeep. Also, not trying to mean anything negative by this and I'm sure you know this, but if the rear window is down the supports don't work at all.

You could PM me and for the cost of shipping from 19343 you could have the brand new ones that came off my 2020 ORP. I had to upgrade them when I installed a C4 hatch ladder.

Thanks Guys - Just getting simple info about best way to prop open the hatch, etc saves a ton of time. I just went ahead and ordered some cheaper ones on amazon as they were only $25. I am selling my 4runner next year and hopefully these will keep me sorted until then.
