I'm toying with swapping my LE 20's for a set of 17 TRD wheels.

The thought is to buy a set of new 17" TRD with TPMS and new tires. Then sell off the complete set of 4 Limited Edition Wheels. My best estimate is about $800 for 4x TRD wheels + $1K for tires + $250 for TPMS. Totaled $2050+.

However, it turns out the spare tire is a matching 20 in wheel and tire and adding that in to the cost is another $500. Would a set of 5 20" wheels even sell?

I will be keeping with the standard 31.9ish diameter and a 20 in wheel should be fine for a spare if needed. But it's then out of the rotation.

So what do you guys do?

since you asked what I would do, I would swap. rationale: I like things matching, plain and simple. I am considering the same set up as you actually. I have 17" replika TRD rims for my winter tires on 265s. I really like the look of them and come spring I am likely going to order another set of the 17" replikas and put 265 michelin defenders on and sell my 20" rims. since I will have both 17" for winter and summer rims I will just opt to replace the spare as well and sell that along with the other 4 20s so everything is 17"

I don't rotate my spare. it's a yellow rim, not the same as the other 4. and I won't put a TPMS in it either

If I were in your shoes then I would swap out the spare as well. If not for a matching TRD wheel then at least a cheap steel wheel with same size 17" tire. The 20" wheel/tire would look really goofy if you actually had to use it as a spare.

When I upgraded to the 285/70-17, I also swapped in the larger spare. This was to ensure that if I had to use the spare, I would not have different rotation speeds across the same axle.

I’m pondering this too. I’m waiting for my ‘22 and I’m having all five tires swapped out for KO2s.

If I were to get aftermarket wheels, the offset would be different than on the factory spare. Would this be a big deal if all the tires were the same size?

I ask because ultimately I’ll be running an AT set on aftermarkets and a winter set on factory and would prefer to have just the one spare.

I originally put in a steel 17” spare with matching Falkens. But in hindsight I should have gotten a matching rim and did five tire rotations. I’m now in the process of upgrading to 285s and I have a brand new 265 tire that is going to waste. Of course I can sell it, but I have four worn Falkens and one new one.

I think having a matching spare tire and wheel is important on a four wheel drive vehicle. When I switched to 285/70-17’s on my Pro, I purchased a new 285 and a new TRD Pro wheel as a spare.
I do a five tire rotation and feel comfortable knowing I have a matching spare tire and wheel.
The 285 fits in the spare tire well, but I do not have KDSS, which may be a little more difficult to fit.

When I changed wheels and tires, I got a complete set of 5. Granted, I was just going from the TRD Pro/SEMA wheels to the 17x8 FN f(x) Pros, so I could've kept my steelie. I got 5 so I could do a 5 tire rotation, have a full sized spare that was identical to the others, and really because I wanted it.

However, there was something else going on as well. When I upgraded, my wife's Tacoma TRD OR got my old wheels and tires. It would do her no good to have the 17s but have a 16in spare with a shorter tire (my setup was 1in taller than hers).

I replaced my limited 20's with 18in fuel wheels and KO2's.

Discount tire bought all 5 wheels and tires from me, and I used a 17in steelie with a generic all season tire for my spare that's the same diameter as my KO2's.

I never do extreme off roading, so my spare is just that, a spare. I do a 4 tire rotation.

I have 285/70r17s on the truck now, with a newish 265/70 as the spare.

If you get a flat on the front tire, it's not a big deal to drive a short distance (in 2hi) with the 265/70 up front.

If I got a flat in the rear, I'd just swap the front to the back, and put the spare up front.

This is really all you need to worry about. Keep the same size on the rear. If I had a limited and wanted to change to 17" wheels I wouldn't bother changing. Tire age would worry me more. If it's already an older tire that came with your Runner than it may make sense to get new.

The spare should be the same size. A different size spare is recognized by the speed sensors and will cause weird RPM fluctuations. It's fine under about 30 mph though to get you out of a situation. Put it up front if necessary.

I have all five tires the same size but do not rotate the spare in.
One thing to keep in mind:
Keep a set of the stock lug nuts to use with spare as in my case, the lug nuts for the aftermarket wheels use a different type of lug nut. So, I keep a set of oem lug nuts in the vehicle in case I need the spare.

Always have a correct sized full size spare. Always. When I get my tires swapped out at 45-60k, if the spare has already been used I replace with the tire that has the most tread left too.

I have KDSS and a 285 spare and didn't have any problem fitting it underneath - have about 1" to the KDSS sway bar.
