It was the only one at the time in Southern California with the color and options that I wanted. 2016 Trail Premium KDSS Magnetic Gray, it’s been rock solid and I will probably be buried in it.

2014 SR5…. Wanted something with a locker and more off-road features, I guess it was the Trail at that time. However, we were getting rid of wife’s Sequoia which was our family hauler, her daily driver and a money pit on gas, so a third row was required. So traded in a Sequoia and my Icon outfitted, dream Tacoma Crew Cab (at the time) for an Avalon for her and unexciting SR5 for me.

Now don’t get me wrong I LOVE 4Runners, this is my second I had a decked out 2001 Sport with TRD SC, headers, wheels and exhaust with Eibach suspension that was AMAZING, but off the lot an SR5 is not a dream ride. Pivot a few years later and the upgrades I’ve added have increased its capabilities, along with the pending upgrade from 6112s / 5100s to Kings front and rear I’m moving towards an optimized setup… But still can’t get back factory lockers, crawl controls, etc that is on a TRD or Trail.

Might look at the Harrop / Eaton electric locker for the rear next year, but probably wait until the 6th gen is out to really build my dream rig. My two younger boys will start driving in 2.5 years so they will be getting the 5th gen and dad will be getting an upgrade. Just wonder if I can hold out on all the upgrades for that long.

I’m also looking at contingencies in case a 6th gen isn’t what we all hope it will be. Used LC200, used GX460 or new Bronco (I know I am a heretic, but I owned a full sized Bronco in college so I have a soft spot…. that is assuming they work out the issues and introduce a Raptor/Warhog version)

Why did you choose the trim level that you did?

2019 TRD Off road, with kdss and nav. No running boards or other worthless addons. Locker, kdss and interior look was worth the ~1-2k up from a sr5 base.

42k sticker but paid $36.9k (I can’t believe the prices right now).

DIY roof rack, rci sliders, 5100s and some stock size ko2 will take me anywhere I want to go!

It will go to my son in 10 years when he turns 16.
