Tires on backorder… Rethink size or brand?

Huge conundrum that I need my peoples on the Interwebs to assist with… I have been waffling on tire size and brand for weeks, only to finally settle on Toyo Open Country A/TIIIs in 255/80R17. I was ecstatic to finally have made my decision and place my order, only to be told that it may be the end of the year before they arrive.

I will be upgrading my 6112/5100 with Dobinson coils to a King setup with JBA HC UCAs (I think Murphy is responsible for the tires not being available, as I lucked into a complete set of King 2.5s with resi/adjusters). So needless to say the new King bling CANNOT sit in the garage waiting for new shoes. I’d like to keep the Kings set to a minimal lift 1.5-2” so this is also a consideration in sizing up to 285s as well.

I am coming from Copper AT3s 275/70R17, but have been trying to avoid going any wider. So the options are go wider and get 285/70R17 as they are more widely available or go with a different brand in 255/80R17. Here are the options

Toyo Open Country A/TIII - 285/70R17 - Available - BMC probable
Toyo Open Country A/TIII - 275/70R17 - Available - Really want taller
Cooper ST-MAXX - 255/80R17 - Available - Balancing, noise, right pull
Falken AT3W - 255/80R17 - Available - No real negatives, just not the Toyo’s, most logical choice
Falken AT3W - 275/70R17 - Available - Really want taller
Falken AT3W - 285/70R17 - Available - BMC probable

I don’t want to do a BMC which is why I leaned to 255s, along with better on-road performance and less hit on power/MPG. I typically do light trails and forrest roads here in the Southeast, nothing crazy, no rock crawling, etc, but want a good balance of on-road and off-road.

The only pause I have on the Coopers (which was my original choice) was balancing issues and long-term noise. Toyos checked all my boxes for 255s but now I can’t get them.

PLEASE HELP!

Me too. I was looking for the Cooper AT3 4S in 255/75/17. I considered the KO2 and Wildpeaks as substitutes but those are also not available in that size. I looked at some other sizes too but decided I am going to wait until next year to get what I really want.

FWIW I have the 285 Wildpeaks and did not need a BMC - I actually get more scrubbing in the front plastic and have just slowly trimmed it back to try and minimize how much I cut.
That said, I think they wear out really fast. I'll get less than 35k on them and looking closer to 30k. Maybe that's normal for an AT tire. I've never had anything more aggressive than Cooper Discoverer before this.

A guy I work with has Toyo at3s on one of his 4Runners and said that they are loud as crap. He ain’t happy with them, but I have no firsthand experience. I put stock size(265 70 17) BFG KO2s range C on my 4Runner that is leveled with Bilstein 5100s. I have 50,000 miles on them now and they have alot of tread remaining.

I’m running the 285/70R17 LR-C Toyo AT3s with no rubbing, no BMC, stock rims, and alignment numbers in the middle of Toyotas recommendation for caster, so I could push it forward more if needed.

I’d probably go with the 255/80s next time. I’m happy with my AT3s, but they’re still fairly new to me.

According to this site just about every tire has balancing issues. Don't worry about it. If they don't balance than they are warrantied. The ST Maxx will be louder than the others as it's the most aggressive, but Cooper makes a good tire. Don't overthink it.

I am also running the 285/70r17 Falken Wildpeak with 17x8.5 -10 wheels.

2" or so of lift up front and no BMC, no rubbing after trimming some bumper plastic

I was able to get my Discount Tire to look in Washington and order them for transfer. Thanks for the location. Talked to a sales guy locally on Saturday and they said the same as Tirerack…. Backordered and not available.

Luckily I got the manager today and he was AWESOME. So now just have to wait for them to traverse the continent. Can’t wait to arrive in Kings and Toyo AT3 255/80R17 heaven!
