Prinsu Rack - T4R5G, Full Length No Drill - Thread Lock

Hello.

I have just unboxed, and within an hour single-handedly assembled the Prinsu in the garage. The screws are snug tight and will be finalized once the roof of my T4R is ready to receive the rack. I need to get the silicon gel from a hardware store and remove the stock bars from the roof, etc.

The package came with no instruction at all. It came with little bag of three thread lock capsules that were packaged with the screws that connect the wind deflector to the rack. I don't know if the threadlock is for only those screws or if all screws should be threadlocked. I am assuming they are only meant for the wind deflector screws since the attachment of that part to the bar is permanent. The cross bars, on the other hand, might need to be removed, adjusted, replaced in the future.

Did I just answer my own question? Maybe I need some threadlock for the main bolts to the vehicle, and I have been planning on using my own threadlocks for that application when the time comes.

It only came with a sheet of paper that was the content checklist. I checked their website and found a pdf and also a link to their YoutTube video which goes through the application of the silicon pretty fast. I think I got it though.

I used some blue Loctite on the cross bar screws when I installed my Prinsu rack. If I remember right, I also used it to hold down the wind deflector as well.

Hopefully you won't need to remove any of the cross bars in the future because it will be tough loctite has lower strength material also.

i used it on all screws, thats because prinsu stop using lock washers.

Also, that fake loctite is pretty weak so it is easily removable.

You could always use your own lock washers. But really, how much vibration can you expect on those screws, and they are at least an inch long. The ones at the wind deflector are shorter screws and they connect to plate nuts that then connect to the bar, and that plate nut could come lose, I can see that, but I don't know if that could be a problem because the plate cannot slid out once the supporting rain has been crewed to the main rails.

Prinsu thinks its prudent and safer to have some kind of way to lock down all their fasteners, either through mechanical means (crush washers) or chemical means (fake loctite), I'm probably going to go with what the manufacture suggests from both a finanancial liability and safety aspect, even if the risk of failure is minuscule.

If you offroad alot, ny-lock, crush washers, and loctite will become a necessity.

If you don't do any offroading or you don't actually use your roof rack, then you probably don't need to lock down your fasteners.

If you are worried that the fasteners are going to get seized, and don't want to use loctite, then don't, but if it fails, that responsibility will fall on someone.

cheers.
I definitely can see your point about safety. In their instructions I didn’t see any warnings about making sure the crossbars don’t fall off. I am sure if I call and ask them they would want to be on the side of safety and suggest they lock down, but that is a wild guess. Those screws engage at least one whole inch, and there are two on each end of each crossbar. I wouldn’t mind at all installing the lock washers but I also think anytime I load the rack it is my responsibility to check the crossbars for being tightly attached to the main rails - even if I use loctite or use lock washers.

I will contact them and ask about the crossbar connection and see what they will say.

Yeah, thats probably the most prudent thing to do if you worried about the fasteners seizing is to contact the manufacture and see what they say.

Well, i dont think you will worry about the cross bars coming off if the fasteners were to loosen up.

The problem arises with the additional harmonics and vibrations that will loosen other fasteners attached to the loosen cross bar (eyelets, awning supports, etc), which will cause the load to fail. Also, loose fasteners tend to damage the powder coating, egging the holes, damaging the threading, etc. The additional vibration can even destroy gear mounted to a loosen cross bar (such as fiberglass RTT).

Prinsu actually addressed this issue ALONG time ago and might still be on their website, when they made the change from locking washers to locktite. I think they stated that the locking washers weren't necessary because you couldn't reuse them and they never had a failure, but recommended loctite due to liability. I honestly, think they were being cheap bastards....

FYI, i have no love for prinsu or CBI, but i do love their rack..lol.

had my prinsu on for 3 years now? or something like that. i have checked the screws, and nothing has come loose after these years, and no loctite used. i swapped out my front faring to install a light bar, so i took the time to check everything last year. loctite is always a good idea, especially if any screws are hidden away.

a bit off topic, but if you want to add a bit of "flair" since you are in the middle of installing..lol.

The only bolts that I applied blue loctite to were the ones that screw into the roof. Wind deflector and cross bar bolts got none.

It's been about a year and I've done 3 weekend trips to the desert, 1 road trip from SoCal to WA and back, and a few days on WABDR, and I haven't had any issues.

Hi and sorry for the up! So what is the best way to solve it? I am stuck in a similar situation, still no manuals, etc, can you recommend me some? Upd. got a standard Thule(review) but it doesn't matter finally

I have found their installation manual here.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Installation is pretty straightforward. The most important thing is that you want to torque the screws the right amount (not less), and the manual doesn't say what size torx driver is needed, and I think it is #30.
