Anyone experienced the toyota safety sense activating? 2020 and newer models.

Did anyone experience the toyota safety sense activating for you? I did during our last summer's road trip. my wife also experienced it when the speaker in the car told her to step the brake and she did almost hit something. i also experienced the toyota safety sense activating when i almost hit a deer in the middle of the road while travelling at 70mph, i was on high beams on a really dark road. i was able to swerve slow down and swerve away from it. God is good! we were all okay and continued driving.

I've had it activate to warn me to brake. It's never auto braked. 2-3 times its happened are when the person in front of me is turning off the road and I am coasting to maintain as much speed as possible. So, not a situation where i wasn't aware, but if i hadn't been paying attention the alert would absolutely have given me enough time to maneuver to avoid or reduce the potential accident.

Never had it brake. Idk if it ever will but I'm not gonna intentionally test.

In my Subaru (equivalent system called Eye Sight), I have had it brake hard on several occasions.

Once when a car cut sharply in front of me (wanted to make a left turn from the right lane).

And once when a large tumble weed crossed the road right in front of me. System works good!

Yes. I decided to ignore the passenger/ collision sensor in the grill n i got myself a new bumper with a bullbar. ( sorry i can’t recall the brand name). But it blocks the sensor, so every day the little yellow light comes on my stating anticollision is off, or clean sensor. I just ignore it. Ive even put a small piece of black tape over where the light come on.

I have only had the Brake like come on once and I have had the lane departure chime come on a few times, but it never corrected anything. I feel like this system will sound an alarm, but won’t make any actual “safety corrections” when driving.

It will not correct lane departure, but it will automatically brake!

It’s written in the manual some of the things that cause it’s alerts and function.

The funny thing is that I've never had it activate when I feel like it "should" have activated but I've had the alert a few times in the same place for something that should never have activated. It seems like a pretty poor system imo. Especially when combined with the fact that the vehicle doesn't alert to objects in your rear camera.

Mine activated within the 1st 300 miles of owning my 2021.
Constuction zone on I-70, car in front got hard on the brakes while I was off the gas. First I got the warning message and dash lights, then as the car in front almost came to a full stop 1/4 mile from the construction it applied the bracks Harder than I was. I was lucky that the dump b**** behind didnt rear end me.
Definitely a nice feature. The lane departure warnings are a little annoying but I'm sure it will help me one day.

Have gotten a brief warning once but no braking. Had a Subaru Crosstrek and it annoyed me backing up, as twice it slammed on the brakes due to garbage cans that were in the yard close to the curb but not in the street. Good system but sometimes too good.

bird triggered mine

Right after I got my 2021 I was driving about 40 mph and a bird dived down right in front of the sensor, setting off the warning. scared the crap outta me.

Sort of similar situation for me. I had just gotten my 2021 and was driving in some stop and go traffic and got a little too close to the car in front of me who kept hard braking. All of a sudden it was like defcon 1 on my dash and scared the hell out of me too! LOL

I like the feature, but there is this one main road that I drive a few times a week that the speed limit is 35mph and there is a sharper turn in it with cars parked on both sides of the street. Easily maneuverable, but for some reason the sensor gets all flustered thinking I'm going to hit one of the parked cars and goes ballistic.

The lane detector is annoying as hell though so I turned it off.

My 2022 applied the brakes for me when the car in front of me slammed on his/her brakes and I wasn’t paying 100% attention. It saved me from smashing into someone. Also, the rear cross traffic alert is awesome when backing out of a parking space that has limited visibility. Lane departure is annoying for the most part, especially in construction zones where the lanes are painted oddly. My old Subaru Crosstrek which cost $20k less than my 4runner would do all these things and drive itself around curves in the highway (called lane centering)...

great info everyone! thank you for sharing your experience about it. i'm glad these systems are now available for the 2020 and newer models of 4runner. cost for insurance also helped lower it.
