2 Extra nuts after front 5100 install

Like the title says, there are 2 extra nuts (1 for each side) in the kit that they sent me. I used the other wide nuts for the top of the shock and payed careful attention to the diagram they sent for the bushings and washers etc. After everything was buttoned up and good to go... I never used 2 of the nylon lock nuts they sent me

Am I messing something up? Everything went together perfectly but I'm a little scared...

did you use the two nylocs they sent or did they send you two extra (used 2 but have 4)? I believe you are supposed to use the new nylocs they sent and not reuse whatever nut was on there

Check your work and make sure the top has the the three top hat bolts have nuts and the middle shock rod bolt has a nut.

There were 4 total nuts that came with the kit

2 of them are the kind where it’s a nut/washer combo because the base is much wider than the nut (like a washer). It was very clear on the diagram to use these on the rod

The other 2 (ones I didn’t use) are the same size but regular nylon lock nuts with normal size base

On each shock, there are the 3 tower nuts, and the main nut on the rod

I thought it might be for the lower mount but it did not fit the bolt so I reused the old nut.

I may just have to contact Bilstein to be sure.

I was hoping 100 people would say “oh yea bro that’s totally normal for that kit👍“

It would help a lot if you posted photos of the installed nuts and left over nuts.

Given there are supply chain issues, Bilstein might have had to change suppliers for the nuts. As I recall, I did not have left over hardware after installing Bilstein 5100 front shocks 6 months ago. I did not receive flange nuts to use on the rod. My kit contained a single locking type nut for the rod which locks by thread interference. I'm wondering if the 2 nuts you have left over are nylon insert jam nuts to be installed after the flange nuts you installed on the rods. They would be the same thread size, and probably shorter in height. Photos would help verify this.

SHHHHHHH*****T

I think I know what I did

I bought the front and rear together as a kit. The bag that had all the hardware, I thought that bag was for the fronts only.

After looking up the instructions for the front and the rear on the bilstein website instead of looking at the ones in my house, I think I was reading the rear instructions thinking they were the front instructions. GOSH DANGIT!!!

I thought it was strange that there was an alignment washer that I needed to put in, but since I thought the hardware was for the front, I just shrugged and continued the install.

The extra nuts, those are for the fronts. The nuts I used, are for the rear

What a damn waste of time. I’m gonna reorder ALLLLL the front and rear hardware, and start all over

I just looked through all the instruction pages. It doesn’t mention anything about the “rear” on all three sheets. You’d have to cross reference the part number on the top left of the page to know if you were looking at the right page

My fault is, I took all 4 shocks out of the boxes and put them on a table with all the instructions and hardware mixed together

Dammit

Lesson learned

I don't think it was a waste of time. its better you found this out now than a few weeks down the road when you've thrown out the instructions and cant figure out why something doesn't feel right lol
