Someone broke into my car without damaging it.

2020 sr5p with keyless remote.
They jacked my tools and a few other stuff.
No damage to the car and no signs of force.
How would someone break into a 5th gen like this?
Just want to get some opinions so I can figure out what to do.
Bummer.

Someone picked up on your fob signal and duplicated it? Maybe no more fob? Dunno! I’m commenting to follow but I have no idea.

Stupid habit but I’m one of those guys that locks the car approximately 50 times. Drives the wife crazy with all the beeping.

Relay signal was something I just looked up. Interesting.

Probably this. There are some threads on here about it, but the FOB is constantly transmitting back and forth with the 4runner. You can turn it off by holding down the lock button and pressing the unlock button twice on the FOB and the red light will blink a few times to show it's deactivated.

Next time you go to unlock your doors, the automatic unlock when you touch the door handle won't work since the FOB is deactivated, but you can just unlock the doors with the FOB buttons.

You have to deactivate the FOB each time, so I pretty much deactivate it any time I'm out in public and lock my doors. It's a legit security issue that needs fixed IMO. I honestly wish I didn't have the keyless features.

If you park outside and you plan on keeping your car for a long time.

get a 2 way paging alarm system or better yet, get an alarm w/ cellular connection, and set it for auto lock after x minutes.

I have a viper w 2 way and cellular service with remote start. I like it. Lets me sleep well at night. Vehicle hasn't been broken in to since i installed it. Smash and grabs don't like the flashing blue LED. Prior to the alarm, i got broken into 5 times because i live in shithole kalifornistan.

Whoa. I did not know this. Very interesting.
Gonna do some searching and learning.

Just seems like a ton of work and suspicious equipment purchases just to take some shit out of some cars.

Sigh

Super easy with a wedge and slim Jim. Of course that'll make some alarm noise.

This might be a dumb question but if someone does successfully relay signal from a Fob and get in the car, does that person now essentially have a “copy” of the fob and can open it at any time?

They are using an amplifier most of the time. Just learned this myself since my neighbors car got hit this way. The popular devices are $20 and the size of a cellphone. Cops said to place the fob as far away from the vehicle as possible to kill the signal or keep it in a RFID box.

I did hear there is a way to reprogram a fob locksmith tool to make a copy and drive off. Beyond my knowledge.

Same thing happened to me and several of my neighbors months ago. I have a key and they still managed to open my 4Runner and another Heep.

that's a lot of work doing that. there's always a chance of forgetting it. thank goodness, my 2020 sr5 uses the real key.

Going with you forgot to lock your vehicle. I hate that the 4Runner doesn't autolock after a certain amount of time that the FOB is away from the vehicle. I have auto lock on my CTS-V and have to constantly remind myself that i need to manually lock my doors on the 4Runner.

either left it unlock or signal was replicated to get in the car. SOS Auto Keys makes a nice device to help you people borrow cars. Its similar to a game boy device but will replicate the car key fob
