Minimalist/stealth offroad bumpers

Figured I would post up and show my bumpers. At some point, I will do a build thread, but for now.....

My goal here was to experiment and not spend a bunch of money or add any extra weight. So far the bumpers have shown to be extremely practical off-road. Much improved approach and departure, with metal protection around all the common scrape points. I also run a skidmark on the rear hitch when offroad.

I designed and cut the rear then had a local shop bend the tubes for the rear and weld them on. I then took some scraps he had and built some long plate brackets and welded on the front corners.

It's all extremely solid.

I plan to really test it out in Moab next month. If the covers end up getting torn up a bit, it should be pretty easy to hide the damage with a rattle can....

I love it. Where do I send the money?!

On a related topic, are your quarter panels plasti-dipped? I started doing the same treatment today and only got one side done until I ran out of blue tape. Doh!

No... painted. Long term plan was to line-x. For now it's rattle can bed liner in front... and flat black in rear. The rattle can bed liner stuff holds up pretty well to scrapes. But so far I've cleaned every obstacle since putting it on. I'm pretty sure Moab will change that.

1 and 3/4 DOM. Wall thickness is 1/8. Pretty standard stuff for bumpers...

Spare is staying put for now. Considering a custom aluminum skid for it, but the material is a little pricey and no access to a water jet at the moment.

Thanks. My plan is to start with Plasti-Dip to see if I can tolerate the look (mine is white). Then change to Line-X. Here's my inspiration:

Like! nice work I really dig what you did with the rear.

Note to self, skidmark, funny that is the first time I have seen one. Shows how much I get out with other people.

Thanks for the compliments guys... It is not the best out there... but i like it and have been pretty pleased so far.

I think it really throws off the jeep folks. I think they believe it is some type of special edition... because man do they stare and look it over. There is a built jeep at every corner here and they always looked very perplexed when I pull up next to them.

Would love to see some detail pics of the front. Its a very clean look overall and works well with the rock rails. Do you have any pics with the front skin off like the pic of the rear?

I have this one I also have a spare aluminum bumper with the crush cans... They are real easy to come by as anyone with an aftermarket plate bumper throws it away.

Hey...I resemble that remark! LOL!

Just to add something meaningful to the thread: in person it looks even better than the photos. @wfo9 's remarks about it looking like a special edition are right on the money. I would do this personally (shop that did the rear metal work is only 1.5 miles from my house), but am set on a rear swing out to get the spare out of the way.

Watching his rig on the trail last weekend and you could really tell that his solution tucks things in all the right places. Very very simple and very very elegant execution.
