Brake issue and need advice

My 2016 Limited now has just over 41K and the rear brakes began to sound like metal to metal so I bought the pads and rotors and did the job. The pads on the rear driver side had plenty of life left but the passenger side was real bad and I don't know the cause. If I can post the pictures maybe some of the experts here can guide me. I have the new parts installed and all seems fine but I have to wonder if I should have changed the calipers as well. It looks as though the pads were not touching the rotor at all so maybe the caliper was stuck.
I guess my pictures are too large to post.

Often, one side worn significantly more than the other means the caliper guide pins are sticky. Did you clean and grease the pins/guides during the new pad install?

Not sure if this helps at all, and your mileage isnt high enough for this to be an issue like i found it to be...im pushing 140,000 at this point...
but...

i just had an all around brake job on my 2014 T4R, and i had to replace two calipers-front...i went and researched, learning that this is sort of a thing with toyota truck brakes...if the pistons in the calipers get pulled out too far, they become a problem and may need to be replaced. maybe you had a piston start to sieze on you, or at least stick

but, as said, this may not be an issue for you with that amount of mileage...

Could have been a bad rotor, a bad caliper, or slide pins, imo. Im at 235k on my 3rd set of pads, never any other brake issues, original calipers. Replaced my rotors at 100k since they wear. I only use the oem factory pads, not the pads they use at the dealer, they suck. I would check those pads again in a few thousand miles, if you replaced the rotor and still wearing strange, you have a bad caliper and need to get it fixed for safety and so it doesnt mess up your rotor.

I inspect all my components in nov every year . I rotate the tires and inspect the pads/calipers/pins and my 2016 runner has the pads looking like the same wear ... front/rear pads look the same 35K miles wear is 30% ....
I clean the cal pins and use anti seize to protect the pins. Toyota had a metal coating .. when the pins rust I clean the pins and used cold galvanizing paint .. the use the anti seize on the pins ..
the pins in the rust belt creates a lot of issues..
my old GM vehicles I remove the rust on the brake components .. clean it up .. pads on my GM vehicles last about 80K miles ..

If one side is significantly more worn than the other side, the worn side is obviously dragging. You can easily check if the new pads are dragging by feeling the wheels after driving; the dragging wheel be be much warmer to the touch than the side that is not dragging.
