Upgrade to 2022

I have a 2015 SR5 Premium w/ 3rd row seating at 70k miles. A dealer is offering 30k trade in (which is 3k more than I paid for it 3 years ago!) and I could upgrade to a brand new 2022 model w/ 3rd row seating for 15k. I know pretty much everything is the same outside of push button start, safety features, etc.

Just looking for opinions on if you think this is worth it to go to brand new and 0 miles for the 15k. Thanks!

Sounds good to me. The thrifty person I am would ask if you are paying over MSRP for the new vehicle.

I know a lot of dealerships are asking well over msrp, but this one is just msrp, not above.

Yes. That is a fantastic deal a NEW rig for $15k. Why wouldn't you do it.

$15k for a new rig /5 = $3k per year plus finance cost which at 5% is about $750 over 5 years. That is if you are financing it. $15k cash in an investment should net you more than 5% return over 5 years.

Your old rig while low miles is creeping up on 7 years old and the new one will retain its value and put you in a better position when you want to sell in the future. The Covid used pricing insanity won't last forever.

I'd finance it, plus cut out cable TV to cover the cost of the loan and put some $ back in your pocket for mods. Cable TV avg $150 month = $1800 year x 5 years = $9000. That's almost 2/3 of the cost to upgrade to a New zero miles rig.

My buddy is about to do the same on his 19 Tundra, with low miles. He's going to take the cash and turn it into a new Bronco that will cost him around $20k. Supply is the issue as there are none available for now.

My local dealer most of the time only has a dozen or less new vehicles, sometimes zero new inventory. None of which are 4Runners, only vans and sedans.
Take a peek at the used prices on craigslist for 4th gens, let alone the 5th gens out there. It's pure insanity.

I know, it's tough to turn down a brand new 4runner and zero miles for 15k. One of my hesitations is waiting for the next gen, but like you said, this crazy used car pricing won't last forever, and mine is getting older. Thanks for the input!

Think of it this way: Buy the '22 now, and when/if the next generation comes out (23? 24? 25?), you can sell your '22 for more than you paid for it. Very likely.

I know, it's essentially the same outside a few differences. Mainly just thinking about it to go 7 years newer and back to 0 miles. But yes, that's one of the struggles I'm having.

Have you ran your current 4runner through Carvana/Carmax/Driveway? I'd do that to make sure you aren't leaving money on the table then go get the brand new one.

Yes the dealership's offer is well above l of those. I've thought about selling private party but have decided against that.

I've owned 2015, 2019 and 2022. 2015 to 2022 is not the same truck! Same engine, and exterior but that's where it stops.

LED headlights

Toyota safety sense options and auto cruise controls

Push button

New larger multimedia screen (the 2015 and 2019 is hurting!)

Android auto

360/multiterrain cameras

It's a no brainer with that good of a trade in....its a better truck minus engine and body if you want more bells and whistles. And now you got a new engine and no tires and brakes to replace. The math is easy on this one.

Thanks for that info on comparison. We purchased our 6th 4Runner yesterday, after an exhaustive search. First one, 2008, then on from there.

June 1 this year, traded our 2018-4WD-4R for a new TRD Tacoma. This did not work, and this month, started search for a new '22 4R. My search, 200 mile radius from our home in TN. Talked to 6 dealers. Lot of info here, but will get to the end result.

Scored a new SR-5-MG-4WD with a few options. The TRD Tacoma has only
2844 miles on the odo. Traded for $139.00 difference. New 4R due to port on the 14th this month, expect to see it early January or close.

We did run into one dealer, and was told $2500-$5000 up charge from MSRP.

Was going to wait for a new '23, did not want to take a chance on this, I wanted the 4.0, and now I get a 4R back in the garage. Pictures here from my brother in laws house in Cincinnati.

That's good to hear coming from someone who has had a 2015 and 2022! Thanks!
