we have a 2000 Tundra (first year for the Tundra in the US) and a 2013 4Runner SR5. Both have their place. We used the Tundra for trips and it worked out fine. 4Runner is better for trips due to inside room. Tundra has been reliable with very few minor issues over 150K miles. You don't buy either for mileage!

However, today I took the Tundra to town to fill gas cans. I wouldn't use the 4Runner for that - too messy. No mods on either - not my thing. I guess it boils down to what you will use it the most for.

4runner is paid off, so gonna look hard at the tundra. Not a fan of buying 1st year production vehicles though.

I just went through this exact question and ended up with a 2022 T4R. I traded a Nissan Titan Pro-4X with camper shell and used it a lot with my bird dog. Decided I wanted to get back into Toyotas as I have had two Tundras (1st and 2nd gen) and really liked them but ended up not using the beds but a few times a year. Once I really weighed the "do I REALLY need a truck" question, I ended up with the 4runner and could not be happier.

The drive is smoother, my dog is happier and there is plenty of room for the family. Plus, it's MUCH easier to park and looks better to boot. Unless you are hauling stuff all the time, the 4runner will probably suit your needs.

you are not going to go wrong with the 4runner. everything you put in there are safe from the elements. you can always rent a trailer if you need a bed to haul things. with the open bed on a tundra, you have to still buy the options. in the end, ask yourself, what are you going to use it for?

Ive considered this myself...personally i came down on the side of the ONLY next vehicle i'd get would be an LC200/Lex LX...since im hanging onto my old F150 anyway

however, if i were looking, may i offer this idea...a 2020 or 2021 tundra TRD off-rd is looking for a good home too. Like Land, they aint making the V8s anymore, and we already know those can get you to half a million miles if you need it to. the big 4dr version is Sequioua-SUV size inside, and if you can put up with a little less state of the art gadgets, it is as sweet driving as most anything out there.

If it were my money, that's what i would do.

I test drove a 2020 off-road and found it was like driving a smaller Chevy Tahoe which I love. I’m assuming that mangusson will have a super charger out for the 2020-2022 4Runner in the next year or so. They aren’t cheap but as long as they don’t screw with the reliability I would definitely get one.
The 4Runner is most likely what I’m getting. Ideally I would get a tundra for 5 or 6 years then a 4Runner but I don’t want a 4cyl turbo. I live in a rust belt on the Atlantic Ocean so buying a 5 year old 4Runner will most likely have rust starting.
Any issues with the super charger shortening the life of these 4.0s?

Installed one at about 90K and made it to 155K before someone ran a red and totaled my Tacoma. Those were hard 4wd launch miles too. No way of really knowing when it will die but forced induction does add more stress to the engine. Just keep it maintained.

I do like the 21 Tundras but they are more than a used one now. In Canada you can't charge more than msrp on new vehicles but can rip people off on used ones. So used Tundras, 4runners etc are more expensive now when they are 2 years old than new ones. And I do have to draw the line somewhere on mpg, the 4runner is about as hard on gas as I want.

I had the same question swimming around my head before I bought my '14 T4R.

I did a page of pros and cons. The 4Runner won out!

Thought I needed a truck, truly didn't. SUV made way more sense.

Been driving an Outback after selling my 4Runner and have regretted it ever since. It's a great car, but it's just a car. A to B transportation.

I was waiting for the new Tundra to come out and once again did the pros vs cons. The Tundra looks to be an awesome truck and has so many qualities that I'd like, but I still don't need a truck. Plus, I live in a more urban area and the overall size makes it even less practical than a 4Runner.

Getting ready to order a TRD Off-Road!!

I had a '16 F150 Lariat that I loved before getting my '20 T4R ORP. My problem was that 1/2 ton trucks are effing huuuge, and it was a absolute pain to take it anywhere and park it. It was so bad where I live I found myself not going anywhere out of fear of getting annoyed with maneuvering and parking it. If you live somewhere like the south with bigger roads/parking spots it may not be as much of an issue, but it was for me in Washington.

The T4R is way more fun and it can go anywhere. MUCH better for taking the border collie around as well.

I live in rural Nova Scotia so full size pick ups are the norm and easy to get around in. I've wanted a 4Runner since about 87 when I started noticing the topless runners in the summer, such an iconic vehicle. The new Tundra looks great but I'm pushing 50 and don't want to have car payments after retirement. I fear the new tech twin turbo will have long term reliability issues compared to the 4runner. Pretty much have my mind made up. 22 off-road in lunar rock with pro wheels and heritage grill to start.

My recommendation is measure garage space. I found parking a vehicle in the garage significantly increases its Life. My garage limited my choices to the Tacoma or T4R. Test drove both. T4R just felt better.
