That sucks! I just had a ding repaired on my windshield by Safelite, no cost and no problems. However, I would guess that not all repairs work and I suspect you are going to have to suck it up and pay your deductible.

it's what, $200 to get it replaced? Ride with it until it's unsafe or unbearable (or won't pass inspection). Don't use the same vendor.

Glass coverage is mandatory in AZ.
I'm on my 4th in 2 years...all free. Glass shops out here actually pay you to get your windshield replaced through them and probably charge the ins companies double I'm sure. Ive received a $100 bill with each replacement.
Currently have 2 chips in current windshield, just waiting for one to spread a bit.

Bummer, I would personally replace it - I hate cracks though.
I fixed a rock chip in mine with a DIY kit and it has not expanded or changed in a couple years.

Seems strange the fill material covers center of the crack suggesting the crack existed prior to fill as opposed to the story that it cracked after filling.

Chips turn to cracks as the windshield expands and cools with the ambient temperature.
I watched one grow as the defroster was blowing on my windshield.
They also typically won't fix cracks that close to the edge because working on them makes it worse.

It is.
Safelite refused to fix it here in CO, told me that messing with it would spread it to the edge.
Went to some cheap shit parking lot ******* and he managed to spread it to the edge.

all the new vehicles now made I have seen are with windshields very thin light weight and if its whacked but no crack it will crack..
now my experience is when really hot out black paint vehicle , it will crack.. also really cold out same deal ding then cracks..
my 4 runner the glass is the thinnest I have seen ..also being so vertical any rock is gonna create a good amount of force .
in my state the glass replacing is 100% ..

Was the workmanship high quality? What brand of glass was installed?

If he received a 100 dollar bill each time, who cares? I'd be riding behind big trucks like crazy lol.

It might not be intentional, but it certainly might be.
On a different vehicle some time ago, I went to an auto glass shop for a chip repair. When I dropped it off the guy conveniently told me (covering his behind pre-emptively), "oh there's a small chance that the repair might cause it to spread and crack". How small of a chance I asked. "Oh like less than 1/100, I'm sure you;ll be fine". So I ok'd the repair and said I'll wait over in the coffee shop next door.
Not 20 minutes later I see the guy walking into the coffee shop. Oh here it goes I thought to myself. Yup mine was one of the "rare" ones that he cracked. Oh but he already checked and he can get one in today if I agree and he orders it in the next 15 minutes. I went and looked at it, and it was a couple inches from either side of the chip, but not in the line of vision.
He said he'd even eat the deductible so zero out of pocket for me. I sensed a total racket. All seemed too convenient. Pulls you in on a special chip repair price, "accidentally" causes a crack then pushes replacement where he makes his money.
In the end I said I'll think about it, left and decided even if it needs to get done I'll never touch that shop again. Held off, and a few years later it has never spread further even in -20C winter conditions.

Exactly what you described. I sense a racket too mainly because the crack supposedly occured as he was finishing and cleaning up. Yet as you can see from pic, the crack is filled where tool was.
