285 spare, should I have TPMS installed?

Hey guys, I put 285's on my 4R and bought a matching TRD pro wheel and tire for my spare. Should I go ahead and have a sensor installed in the spare when I get it mounted and then just have that programmed if I swap it in for one of my other tires?

I would only do that if you intend on doing 5 tire rotations. And even then I don't know how the TPMS programming would work. I know I can check sensors with my scan tool but pretty sure the vehicle is only set up for 4.

I have a worn out 10 ply 285 on my nasty stock steel spare wheel under mine!

I had the TPMS installed in the 5th when I switch everything out to KO2s. I wanted 5 tire rotations with ease and it works fine. The 5th wheel is displayed on the dash display.

What kind of scan tool do you have?

Actron I think? I hardly ever use it. I'm a classic car mechanic. It's rare I work on anything that isn't mine newer than the late 80's.

Sweet FJ40 by the way. I miss my 79.

Thank you, I love my FJ40 and wish I lived somewhere that I could enjoy it for more than a few months out of the year!

I've a 2016 TEP and would like to do 5 tire rotations, but I was told mine only has a 4 sensor capability. I'd like to know what years / models can use a 5th TPMS module....

Ya I was surprised to see it (spare) pop up! Glad too as I was in the past “one of those” who assumed the spare on a car was “ok” until you attempted to mount it and found out it was almost flat!
